Do you think the government would introduce a 'bike tax' if that was how most people travelled?

The price of the London congestion charge keeps getting higher, the price of public transport keeps getting higher. Would push bikes also be taxed if every commuter suddenly abandoned their cars and travelled to work by bike? What do you think?

Answers:
Well, the bike tax would only be first tax you'd pay when you bought it . . . then, the other fees would kick in. Of course, if u had to replace a tire, you'd have to pay a disposal fee . . . oiling the bike chain would of course be taxed - I mean it is a petroleum product and lastly there would be a tax on the increased amount of oxygen you'd need. Hmmmm . . . maybe some sort of emission control would come into play because of all the carbon dioxide you'd be exhaling at a faster rate.
nope!
government will apply tax to things that the public adopt.

its all nice and fair that we don;t pay tax on bikes but if we all swapped our cars to bikes how would the government survive without all that tax:? the roads would go to hell.
yes definitely they're crooks
OFCOARSE THEY TAX THE LOT
We were told that the congestion charge was to encourage people to get onto bicycles. I cant see them introducing a tax, no.. but., they could.
The government could easily survive without the taxes from people switching to bikes. They would tax bikes anyway. That is the democratic way.

The roads wouldn't suffer, there would be much less traffic, they wouldn't need rebuilt nearly as often.
they couldnt because they wouldnt be able to keep track of who had a bike. with cars its another story. you can tell if you have a car with the license plate number. if the government made a tax on bikes, they would probably make license plates for them.
some towns do that now! It's called a bike permit!
Now why would you want to give them any ideas?? Don't you feel taxed enough?
YES the goverment is made up of a bunch of cheap theifs they keep charging us more and more eventully its going to be like comunisim
Great question.

It wouldn't suprise me if they did, however since Bikes (as in pedal bikes) are not bad for the environment and do not cause as much congestion, I would hope they didn't.

If they actually did introduce a 'Bike Tax' then I would have to arrange a petition for people to sign to get rid (or should that be "get RIDE" - hahaha) of Bike Tax.

Then again, I've got a special pass that gives me totally free travel around London for a good long time, muahahahaha.

:-)
yes, they would bring in a breathing tax, if they could get away with it. they have taxed nearly every thing else in the uk.
ofcourse, they would tax the air we breath if they had their way.
Yup, they'd tax you for breathing if they could monitor it. In London if you're under 16 bus prices have gone down cos they're free now, it really annoys the old ladies.
I wish you hadn't of ask this question. one of our polititions will see it and in a couple of weeks I will have to go get tags and insurance for my grand sons bike and of course pay the road tax. my answer is YES!!
Government will tax anything they think they can get away with taxing. They'd tax the number of times your toilet was flushed in a day if they thought they could get away with it. Government is always looking for new ways to get more money out of you. They never stop to think about how YOU will come up with it. They never think to do with less themselves. That's YOUR job-- you have to figure out how you will pay your bills with what you make AND how to send more money to the government when they pass yet another law that says you must now send more money to people who have proven themselves to be very poor stewards of it. You pay or face legal trouble with the government. Remember, the gummint has all the time and money in the world to take you to court
If the government could tax oxygen they would but thats a good idea though
most definitely
yes they would and thanks for the two points too
It would depend on two things: First, would they have lost sufficient revenue from the gas and road taxes (from everyone abandoning cars) that they'd need to make up the shortfall, and second, do they have the power to do so?

The answer to the first is "absolutely yes" -- historically, the UK has been very quick to tax anything necessary to maintain revenues, and also quick to prosecute anyone perceived as "ducking" the tax system.

For instance, a very small number of people have made the modification necessary to run their diesel cars on used vegetable oil (what they fry food in); the cost is minimal, performance and economy do not suffer, and you can fill up using disposed vegetable oil that restaurants normally pay to have hauled away.

In the US, the response from the government has been "Whatever, no big deal", but in the UK, the response has been to set up a small subset of the police force to seek out and ticket these drivers, because they're essentially using the roads without paying the taxes that maintain those roads.

The answer to the second one, in the UK (and elsewhere), is also yes.

So to answer your question -- absolutely. If every driver in the UK stopped driving in favor of bicycling, there would be a tax placed on bicycling in some fashion. They might do it with requiring bicycle licenses, or a direct tax on entering certain areas, or a per-bike yearly registration fee, but believe me, they'd do it.

Your best bet: start bicycling now, and enjoy your tax-free status (at least as far as cars are concerned) while you can, because a mass exodus to bicycles is unlikely.
Do you work for the government? Thanks, just what I need, another tax.
No, Folks are having a hard time to make ends.
Some US states are testing a "miles-driven" based tax, because more efficient cars will pay less in gasoline taxes.

Yep, the govt monster is a hungry beast. and the cool thing about having all the guns is that they can do whatever they want!
YES!
Of course.what did they do when people started buying more fuel efficient diesel cars.raise the price of diesel .that's the nature of the idiots we have in power at present..ride a bike and you will probably have to pay a slow speed tax equivalent to car tax..they will think of something.meanwhile, stew on this ..it costs around 20p to make a gallon of diesel, right now we are paying nearly £5.00 per gallon.how do you think fatboy Prescott runs his three Jaguars.on us of course
It is possible that if, theoretically, everyone travelled by bike that the government would have a need to issue bicycle licence plates and charge a registration fee of some kind, and/or an annual recurring fee. Right now the government pays for transport infrastructure through revenues generated from the purchase of petrol and other means, such as the congestion charge. If everyone stopped using automobiles, of course the government would have to pay for roads (and bike lanes) by some other means. The idea behind the congestion charge is to get people to leave behind their automobiles and take a more environmentally friendly way to work. But until everyone switches away from cars to bicyles and public transport, we already have a "bike tax": a sales tax, or as you Britons call it, the VAT.
we (cyclists) already pay taxes.

Sales tax on the equipment and bike itself, tax on transportation, tax on my bike socks, tax on my floor pump, I own a home so there's property tax, I have a job so there's income tax all of which goes.

to pave the roads that I cause less damage to when on my bike and for the parking lots I don't use when on my bike.

And guess what?

I have a car!!

So I also pay registration, gas, insurance..and all that stuff you do. I ride because I enjoy it, I ride to look and feel better than I would if I sat in the car.

So enjoy the parking spot you got because I rode today, take a breath of fresh air, enjoy the space in the gridlock you get while I ride. Say hi when I wave a cheery hi passing you while you're stuck in traffic. And come out and ride/

Log off the dang computer and come out and ride, you may like it. I ride for fun, and so i can eat more ;-)
bike tax--- bad idea
