How are mpg figure calculated on cars? Urban, combined, etc?
Answers:
My guess is they they are theoretical (as in using math models for the engine and weight of the vehicle) or calculated in a test lab. Nothing real world.
So many different variables (such as number/weight of passengers and cargo, A/C on or off, correct tire pressure, clean air filter, acceleration rates, and even the speed you drive, etc.) affect gas mileage, the mpg rating is just an estimate.
miles divided by gallon = mpg
mpg is calculated by teh good folks at the epa. they drive thte vehicle in a simulated city and highway environment to determine teh approximate fuel economy. in the city testing, they stop and go and generally do not exceed 35 mph. In highway testing, they generally do not stop, but they do not exceed 45-50 mph. If you only drive 45-50 on the highway and are easy on the throttle, you may see mpg figures close to what is displayed on the window of the new car. In reality, your mileage will probably be a little lower. If you read the info on the window sticker, it will show a mpg average for both city and highway, but under it in a smaller font will tell you it will vary between two numbers.
Very carefully.
load of old crap if you like the stuff the mpg
