Eastbourne to Newcastle - best time to set off?
Answers:
No, no, no - forget the previous advice if you leave about 5.00 - 5.30am, you should be round on the M25 circa by say 6.30 - 7.00 am, ahead of the rush hour. Do not, as a previous answer suggests go through the Dartford Tunnel and onto the M11. Stick with the M1 right up to Leeds - then transfer across to A1 - I can't remember the the exact route from there - but it is (or was) fairly well sign-posted.
I managed to do Dewsbury (jct 40 M1) - to Brighton in about 3 1/2 Hrs, but that was many years ago and obviously traffic has increased enormously in that time. In terms of time, yeas should take approx 6 - 7 hours but that is without a stop. Driving that distance, You would need to make a stop (even just a 'comfort' stop) which would add to the time for your journey.
Drive carefully - enjoy your trip
leave at 9am . will take about 6 hours so you will arrive before evening rush hour .

If you follow the AA recommended route via M25 - Dartford Crossing - M11 - A1 and you leave at about 12 noon, estimated time is 6 hrs 15 mins (allow 7 hours with breaks) - and you should then arrive in Newcastle at 7 pm : You should have no major hold ups other than the occasional set of roadworks.
YES JUST ONE ,,,TRAVEL BY DAY .YAWNNNNN.
i drive up to Durham from Basingstoke quite a lot, the best time is late Sunday afternoon, i can get there in just under 4 hours (not always sticking to the speed limit), but i drove once on a Friday and it took 7 and a half hours, nightmare. if you can drive overnight, i would suggest you leave at about 8-9pm, you still have a couple of hours in the light, and you get there in the middle of the night and get a few hours kip before the day starts. have fun.
and the advice from MEPHISTROPHE LES was spot on, keep on the M1 and then when you get to signs for the A1, just keep in the left hand lane, is the simplest route. don't go through Leeds or you will never be seen again for trying to get out, very busy there.
