Do a lot more airplanes fly over Islington on their way into Heathrow than they used to?
Answers:
I beleive all the aircraft tht route over Islington are coming off the Bovingdon VOR, if so the answer is no.
Maybe the prevailing wind has spent an extended time coming from the west.
aircraft generally land into wind, it is far preferred. all airports are layed out when constructed with there runways into the prevailing wind, all of the runways are then numbered acordingly for example a runway where the wind is coming from the west would be at 270 degrees true, as aposed to magnetic, as all forecast winds are in true degrees, this number is them painted on the runway at the threshold as 27, giving the runway its designator, the beauty of this is that you now also have a runway at 09, or an east wind runway. there are three runways at heathrow, if you hang on one minute I'll get my airport legend out and confirm the directions, although from memory there are two which are parallel which run east west but let me check..
yes there are two parallel on an east west layout with a third on a 04/22 layout meaning that the runway runs 40 degress off true north. i would imagine that the aircraft pattern may have changed, as it is my understanding that the two paraelle runways are used one for incoming aircraft and the other for out going. again depenent on the wind each runway will have a circuit attached to it, with a parallel i would imagine, but not able to confirm that the northern runway would operate righthand for 27, ond left hand for 09, and the southern would operate left hand for 27 and a righhand for 09, whichwould keep the aircraft seperate.
I have only flown into heathrow once, and I used helipad and an approach from the thames, which is the rotor wing coridor for london, as you have started to notice aircraft movments you mind set may start to point out others, next time your in kew just look at how many helicopters operate down the thames corridor..
Hope this helps

they change all the time depending on wind conditions etc
I live in Hackney
Aircrafts are assigned routes as they come into LHR for landing.
Aircrafts flying over Islington / Hackney generally would have come from BPK (Brokmans Park) LAM (Lambourne) and BNN (Bovingdon) only when they are landing at runway 27L/R (left / right)
If you require help in understanding can send you the charts for the assigned routes.
Also see this site to understand how aircrafts are vectored for the finals over London.

Hope the site will answer your question.
JD417 please note:
The orientation of the crosswind runway at Heathrow is: 05/23 and not 04/22
Though it is not even used, it is used as a taxi and holding pattern for take offs from runway 27R.
Runway 09L is not available for take off, as there is an agreement by the government not to use the runway, as it will affect citizens of a small village nearby.
Hence when the wind is from the east, runway 09R is used for TO and 09L for landing
