What are the implications of buying a CAT D car. Does having a current MOT and V5 make a difference?
Answers:
As KB says it is usually light damage, I think if the insurance company has written the car off, the MOT and V5 are invalidated, once repairs have been done, if you get the car inspected by an MOT test centre they will issue you with a new MOT certificate, and you then can apply for a new V5.
Cat D is very very light damage but due to the cost of repair it is clsssed as an insurance write off it does not effect your insurance as we have purchased one and we knew the person who had repaired it and always make sure you can see the car before it is repaired all the better if not make sure you get an independant examination or someone who knows about cars to go with you. Cheap way of getting a good car. It is usually just light panel damage so should not be structual.
has the car been repaired properly and by reputable car body repair garage. The value of the vehicle is drasticaly reduced and you will find it hard to sell the vehicle in the future
if you or somebody you know has a good knowledge of cars to check over the car before you buy it you can bag yourself a good bargain. just remember that if you are not planning to keep the car for long and you sell it telling the new buyer it was a cat D car they will most likely run a mile thinking there is something wrong with it, knowing you haven't kept it for long
