What happens if you are stopped by the police for a random car check, & something does not check out?
Just curious as someone asked me this & I did not know!
Answers:
they hold a record yes but they cant do anything with it unless you are required to produce certain documents & you dont.
The database they check will confirm who the car is resistered to; tax & insurance etc however this is not always 100% up to date & you may be required to confirm this by way of a 7 day producer where you will have to take your licence; mot & insurance certificate to the local nick.
If they checked you and the car out and "happily" let you go, I wouldn't think there would be any kind of record kept.
You DO need to get the car registered in your name for a lot of reasons with one being keeping the police happy. I wouldn't push my luck. In my state if you don't register your car with ten days of buying it OR renew your tag by the end of your birth date year, it will cost you a $25. dollar fine. Be legal. Good luck. Pops
you will get done, damn the pigs.
Wait..Are you Daniel Baldwin?? Give it up.. You're not going to get away with doing an OJ Simpson/Bronco thing.
I'm assuming by your question you have purchased a vehicle, 30 days has not elapsed yet, it isn't in your name on the official data base yet, either because you haven't done the necessary paper work or it hasn't been entered into the computer yet. Since they let you go, they aren't particularly worried about it. If however you get stopped again, and let's say 60 days have now gone past, the first stop may still be on record as information, and if you still haven't done the transfer you will probably get a ticket for "Taxes due the state" or something similar. Get it done.
Say his happened to you. A record is kept but you wouldn't have to concern yourself at this stage as the officers were satisfied with your explanation as to why the vehicle was not registered to you. You will not be written to. However failure to notify DVLA of change of ownership is an offence. If you happened to be stopped on a future occasion and you had no proof of ownership of the vehicle, you run the risk of being arrested for suspicion of theft or taking without consent etc.
If you don't receive a new reg certificate for the car within 2 weeks, I recommend getting a V62 form and apply for the reg certificate yourself.
