Is it worth buying a 'personal alarm' to carry around?

You know the ones, they attach to your belt or bag and when you feel threatened you can pull a cord and it makes a really loud noise - are they worth carrying, do they do any good and scare attackers away, or would they make an attacker more angry? Any experiences? Thanks

If you think that it will make you feel safer - but you might ask yourself the questions, Will anyone respond to it, will there be any one around, will you have it to hand when you need it - most likely not. (try fetching a car remote plip out of your bag quick and pressing it - imagine this under attack) and will the battery be in working order after being left in your bag for months of no-use. Try to avoid the most likely places for someone to attack you. If you can't, make sure a friend is with you.
A loud scream can be as good as an attack alarm and you don't have to find the button to press. (costs nothing too).
Worthless. If you want to carry something for personal security, carry a gun.
Instead of an alarm, or a gun as someone else suggested, try pepper spray.
Take a Rottwieler
Personal alarms are only good if you get the time to use them why not join a martial arts club..good for your body and mind
