I think as an aussie, you can actually send in your Australian licence to the dvla in exchange for a British licence if you want.

But check the dvla website because I think you can drive for up to a year with an Australian licence in the UK

You can drive in the UK for 12 months on your Oz licence.
You can indeed apply for aninternational licence that will allow you to drive in the UK. This, however, only lasts for 12 months, after which, if you are staying here, you must apply for a full UK driving licence
