Just what was the "Baby On Board" sign for? Did it help us decide which car not to hit in case of an accident?

Answers:
The original idea was to inform emergency services in the event of an accident to search in AND around the vehicle involved for a baby (it may have been thrown out of a car for example)
its for emergency services so they know to look under seats and stuff
I don't see the point of them personally. Doesn't stop people driving too fast.
It informs t w a t s on the road that drive like idiots to be epically careful as this car has small children in it. It just for a split second make the drive aware, that's all.
Apparently it was originally intended so in case of an accident the emergency services would know to look for a child.
However, if the adults in the car are so badly injured I doubt whether a pocksy little sign would remain in the window.

I think people now use it to prove their fertility or to justify why they have bought such a crap car, like a Citroen Picasso.
It's to alert emergency services to look for a baby/small child in an accident in case they've been thrown from the car and the adults involved are unable to communicate that a child was on board.
They tend to be fitted by men, who like to demonstrate to the world that they don't fire blanks.

As for deciding which car to hit in an accident, if that's the reason for the "Baby on Board," "Little person onboard" or any other bloody silly sign, then its pure ageism, and therefore politically incorrect.

:)
Exactly! Ive had 2 kids and never seen the sense in having one in my car!!
Very interesting because almost without exception, people sporting these signs drive like cunts. I can only imagine it is one of two things; It's a cryptic message meaning '**** at the wheel' or '**** you, only my kids matter'. Very few cars with these signs actually have children on board.
ISTR that it being the result of a US woman being rescued from her crashed car, but not the small child in the back, is an "urban myth".
they are used by fat ugly mingers to show someone did actually shag them once, usually after large amounts of alcohol.
is to help emergency services look out for little ones during an accident
I think most of the above answers are true.try not to hit the car with the sign that says "Psychopath On Board". Drive Safe
The emergency services answer is the real one, some Vicar devised the idea, an alternate reson is that someone driving a car with infants / baby on board may be easily distracted by whats happening inside the car, so you could apply a little more caution.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with alerting the emergency services as to the possibility of a small child being on board at the time of the accident.
These signs are left on even when children are not on board .Therefore potential life saving time could be wasted by the emergency services searching for the child.
These signs are NOT endorsed by the emergency services!
At best they could encourage a following driver to think about his aggressive behaviour.
At worst , some proud parent is flaunting their fertility.
They don't make me slow down or drive more careful
They are of no use whatsoever, they are in the same class as 'caution show dogs/cats in transit'. It's just some thing to show off - no one is in the slightest bit interested, except of course for the people who make the signs!
It's to encourage you to be a little more considerate and/or careful to protect the little darling.
Not sure its original use but practically it tells us the driver is likely to be distracted/suffering post natal depression/suicidal/mind on things other than driving and we should therefore stay well clear of them.
If they have a accident they know to look for a baby as well because they could fall behind a seat. "Out of sight, out of mind"
