What do the notices on road tankers, intended for the police and fire brigade, mean?

Answers:
The number is a Hazchem code and indicates the contents. The code for petrol I believe is 1203 while diesel is 1223.

They give details of the contents and how to deal with them in an accident.
It tells them what the tanker contains ,wheter it is dangerous or not , and is intended to let the fire brigade deal with a spillage quickly and safely using the correct materials so as not to cause a more dangerous situation.
Gives the IMO Code and advice on what action to take. In the cab will be a TREM Card (Transport Emergency Card) with further advice.

If the label has an "E" on it, run away, because it means Evacuate.
the orange and black signs are called hachem signs and the numbers and letters denote certain hazardous chemicals
They tell the fire brigade what the chemical is, what to use for protection against it, and what they can and can't use on it if it's on fire.
The information you need for this answer is in the highway code, I could tell you the answer but it would be better to read the highway code yourself. Even if you don't drive rules 1 to 33 apply to you as a pedestrian. Happy reading!
The sign will read as such;

3YE, 3Y What to use to put it out if on fire 3Y means use foam E means evacuate the area if involve in a accident

1203 Is the ID code of the liquid carried 1203 is petrol/gasoline

Then below that is a phone number to use to get specialist advice in the event of a accident
It gives them information on the contents so they know how to deal with them in the event of an accident or spillage.
If the tankers are involved in an accident, the notices give the Police and Fire Brigade an incidation of what they are dealing with as to evacuation of nearby homes and businesses, and the sort of blazes that could happen.
