I think you wil find there ae quite a few who claim powered flight before the Wright Brothers. The main point about the Wright Brothers' flight was that it was the first powered flight that was CONTROLLED by an onboard pilot.

There was an effort mounted some years ago to gain recognition by family and supporters; obviously it was not totally successful but it did bring an interesting story of events forefront. I'm sure if you go to amazon.com and research books on the subject you will gain more insight as to what happened. I read a biography about the Wright brothers sometime back and remember that the topic was touched on briefly. Even your local library or Internet search on the subject may provide information even if some of it may be biased.

No pictures were ever taken, and no real proof exists any longer, therefore it is not known whether he actually made the flight he is recorded as making. It also isn't known he actually used an engine to make the flight claimed a powered flight. He was initially a designer of sailplanes and suddenly appeared with an engine-powered plane, which was not ever heard of of known to exist by anybody proir to the flight, therefore it was deemed an undetermined flight due to lack of plausable evidence.
