I don't know about the very small ones (I didn't have isofix then) but for stage 1+ (ie age 1+) there were only 2 kinds - a Britax one and a Maxi-Cosi one. The VW own-brand that was available was the Britax one in different fabric as far as I could tell!
Of the two, I definately thought the Britax one looked better and more solid.
What might be REALLY useful, though, is that Which? have crash-tested all the most common ones so you can see if the one you plan to buy is OK. You can view a limited number of surveys online for free, or you might have to register for a 'free trial' (remember to unregister afterwards unless you want to pay!) to see them, but they were really useful. There was a pram-style one that smashed into about a million pieces when they tested it.. you wouldn't want to get that one!
If you do go for the Britax, check the fit at the Britax website. Alternatively, if you buy your seat from Halfords, they'll try it in your car for you.
