Should a driver have the choice to wear a seat belt?

Why should it be law to wear a seat belt your not hurting any1 else so should you get fined? or told to wear it

Answers:
thank god i live in New Hampshire.
live free or die
no belt law or helment law
let thos who ride decide
its the big insurance game ..
Its a matter of life and death, and the state doesnt want that on their as.s if there wasn't a law like such.
no it's the law
i think it should be a law but the penalty shouldnt be that great, if you want to put your own life in jeopardy then that should be your choice. but you could also look at it like, if somebody hits you and you die because you werent wearing a seatbelt, they would be very sad.
I feel it is the individual's choice to wear a seat bell or not. I have a brother that had been in a car accident had he had a seat belt on he would be dead..
There was a guy who refused to. He died and a seat belt could have saved his life.
Wearing a seat belt doesn't hurt you. what difference does it make.
People are stupid. When they die there are people who would be devastated by it. Parents have children, bills have to get paid, etc.
Wanna know why its illegal? Say you get clipped by another car enough to throw you out of your seat, and since you werent wearing a seatbelt you are unable to steer your car around the three kids on the corner, killing them. Thats why ive heard.
no. it is for there own good. and for others as well.
adults should be able to choose for themselves, even with the helmet law. kids under 18 should have to use them but after 18 if you want to risk your life that should be your choice. you never have more fun than when you almost die but don't get hurt, they call it adrenaline what a rush.
Look its not only the seat belts which save the lives of drivers ..there are other reasons of death in car accidents.obviously seat belts decrease the chance of getting killed in accidents.finally the choice should be driver's.
Because I don't want you hitting a pole, going through your windshield, and landing on my car. Now I have to gen involved with your sorry choice and insurance company.
Freedom, what a joke. What happened to our God given right to free will?. Welcome to the new Rome, Don't believe me retrace Romes history and you will see. Take that one on for a school thesis. Can anyone say " militaristic"
I AM. S
I know quite a few fat bastards who can't get it round them! I wonder if you can get away with it on medical grounds?
I think it should be drivers' choice HOWEVER if you are in an accident and severely hurt, and this could have prevented by wearing the seat belt. the issue is not so much anyone is truly concerned about the damage you did to yourself but more so the cost of the medical expenses in fixing you up.
I too believe it should be personal choice, but unfortunately there is very little freedom of choice today.
Have you ever considered that if you were in a RTA and not wearing a seatbelt that you might not die.but instead be horrifically disfigured or permanently physically disabled in some way. Just wear the seat belt!
You are one really ignorant tosser!

Go and play with yourself instead of asking such dumb questions!
No Choice man, you have to wear seat belt when you are driving
If you have an accident an ambulance or some other emergency service may have to come out to you. The worse your injuries the longer the nhs will have to treat you, then you could be a burden on benefits as you can't work - need I go on..
Like BASE jumping, rock climbing, extreme sking and those sort of "sports" (????) If you want to risk your life, fine. Just don't look around for any help when it goes wrong. You sure as hell won't get any from me.
The seatbelt law killed the overtime for operating theatre staff. The hours spent putting people back together with all their fractures to sort out, the head injury caused by hitting something after they left the car. The hours spent by plastic/max fax surgeons putting faces back together and picking glass out of the face that had gone through the windscreen!
Those were the days.
As long as you don't fly through your windscreen and hit me in the head I don't mind. I personally like to buckle up though as although I love aggressive sports and the adrenaline rush I wouldn't want to go down in the newspaper as the guy who died from crashing into a lamp post. There are cool ways to go and dumb ways.
Would you leave your seat belt off in a plane after the pilot warns you of an emergency landing?
Well then!
You want to kill or maim yourself, go ahead. Just don't expect the NHS, the State or anyone else to look after you if you are so stupid as to not wear a seat belt and give yourself a sporting chance. If you put yourself at risk, then you should bear the consequences and not expect to have your mediacl expenses and care paid for you.
I have heard of people being burnt alive through not being able to get out of a car which had overturned and caught fire and others who have drowned after being driven off the road and into a river. Surely we should have freedom of choice! Yes, the health service is picking up the tab for for putting us back together when we crash but that's why we pay our Taxes.. In my opinion it falls into the same category as crash helmets on motorbikes, cyclists on main roads, Rock climbing, jumping out of perfectly functional aircraft etc etc etc.. There is a sensible option and a not so sensible.I am old enough to choose for myself!
As long as you can GUARANTEE that my tax and insurance dollars will NEVER go to cover your medical expenses or to support your newly-indigent family because you were too stupid to protect yourself from yourself -- go ahead and turn yourself into hamburger for all I care.

I was nearly killed several years ago by an idiot who thought it was his right to not wear a seatbelt. He had swerved to avoid a dog and lost control of his pickup when he slid to the passenger side. The proximate cause of the accident was his failure to buckle himself it.

I survived thanks largely to my seatbelt. He was ejected from his truck and was killed instantly. He left a wife and 3 young children behind. He had minimum liability insurance on his truck -- not enough to cover the damage to my car -- and no life insurance.

How to you propose to protect ME against IDIOTS like YOU who refuse to do your civic DUTY and protect all of us?
I believe that we, as Americans, have the right to choose to do bodily harm to ourselves if we choose. Yes, I firmly believe tha buckling up is a good idea. However, I also feel that it is morally wrong for me to impose my "good idea" on somone else, as long no one else is getting harmed. Now, if you choose to not wear your seatbelt, then you should forfiet certain abilities, such as medicare/medicaid when you can't work. You may call this coersion, but you still have a choice.
It's your right not to wear a seat belt just as long as you don't complain if you get caught or get your face ripped off in an RTA.
It should be up to the driver/passenger if they want to wear one.
Its not just that its the person's choice whether they want to end up as hamburger on the freeway. We all have to deal with increased insurance costs and an overburdened healthcare/social services system due to the death or maiming of people who don't wear seatbelts.
You may have the choice of wearing a seat belt, if I have the choice whether you receive intensive care following an accident when the injuries are significantly worse than if you had worn a belt. I wouldn't want to see scant resources wasted on fools who don't protect themselves.
I remember a poster when the law was introduced years ago, it had a woman with a smashed up face saying 'there should be a law against this' giving the impression she had been beaten up when she had recived them from smashing her face into a wndscreen at 50mph.
