Can a helicopter do the loop the loop?

Answers:
a helicopter that has a fixed rotor head such as the lynx can loop it over, other helicopters that have articulated rotor heads like the gazelle can not perform this because the blades would flap to far down and collapse under its own weight.

GAZELLE ENGINEER
go in one and try!
I know that model radio controlled helicopters can (they can also fly upside down), so I would guess that perhaps some of the high performance military helicopters could.

But you would never get me in one.
iv seen one do it at an airshow but its supposed to be impossible
I saw a military helicopter loop the loop at the International Air Tattoo at RAF fairford this year. Sorry do not have the details of what type of craft it was, but discovery wings channel often features displays from the flying displays so may be worth a look
As yet no helicopter can do a true loop the loop, the nearest to a loop for some time was a move performed by the Lynx helicopters called a rollover.
More recently the Apaches and comanches are nearer to an actual loop.
Yes the Royal Navy Lynx can do it very well but not all helicopters can don't know the types but no doubt someone on here has a more comprehensive answer.
Modern helicopters yes
yes but not many.
Yes. There are issues, it isn't something you can do with the same ease as fixed wing aircraft, but it is possible. Small helicopters with stiffer rotors have less problems. Bigger choppers with more flexible rotor blades have more of an issue because the rotor can deflect into the tail boom. Having said that, I've seen a CH53E inverted in the middle of a loop.

Airwolf, the movie, made the claim that helicopters can't loop. It was never true. What they can't do is sustained inverted flight, unless the rotor blades are very very stiff.
yes it can, its not bound by the force of gravity just how much air is can push down and gain upward force. its just most helicopters are not designed to.
Yes they can, i was like you till i see it with my own eyes at an airshow.
i guess not .!
99% cannot perform this feat but there is at least one military helicopter that can so the answer must be a qualified YES
I was a plane captain on MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters when I was in the Navy. The aircraft has many capabilities, including being able to lift three to four times it's weight. I witnessed this loop performed once, and also watched a test video from Sikorsky. I don't know about the other helicopters, but I know that this one could.
A few, specialised, helicopters can. They have special rotor heads to allow for greater manoeuvrability. It is nice to think that model helicopters showed full size ones how it was possible.
Only 1, the Royal Navy Lynx can. The propellers are so responsive they can alter their air flow to allow for this sudden change in control. They normally point in slightly to maximise the flow downwards to give maximum lift. But the Lynx can also adjust them upwards to give downward lift.
Yes>

the Russian MI-28 Havoc is supposed to able to do this as well, although I have never seen one. I have seen footage of a Commanche performing something that looked suspiciously close.
You must be young Airwolf used to do it every saturday tea time here in the UK.
Ive wondered this!! Ill bet it can only happen on a 1 g roll. The collective can be dropped to negative to autorotate but no further.
Yes the Westland Lynx helicopter can loop and also back flip.
It has a rigid rotor head made of titanium which allows it to make such manoeuvres with relative ease.
I have seen the Apache AH-64 loop at the Boein Helicopter's formerly Mcdonnel Douglas Helicopter system'sCulver City Plant in 1983 at the airshow. I worked there from '88 to '94.
course the lynx is the only aircraft that can do it
the westland lynx does in its displays at air shows, although it is not quiet a perfect loop.
Yes they can.
