Why do we have yellow number plates on the back and white plates on the front of a car?

so idiots know which way a car is heading.
My guess would be so you can tell the difference between the back of a car and the front in the dark. Not always easy if there's limited light.
Would you know if you were coming or going otherwise?
It's illegal to have anything white or reflective on the rear of a vehicle,as you wouldn't be able to tell what was the front/back
a. the law says so
b. so that you can tell front from rear
