T is it like to serve on a submarine, and can you overcome claustrophobia?
Answers:
I can't speak for other countries, but in the US Navy you'd first have to volunteer for submarine duty (which I doubt anyone would do if they were claustrophobic) and second, you'd be screened for it during the training and evaluation. Not just anyone can serve on US submarines, they are an elite group of guys and some of the best human beings you'll ever meet.
As for overcoming claustrophobia, yes it can be overcome with treatment. The key is that you have to want to be cured and work to understand that, like any phobia, the fear is irrational.

Yah, but if you have a weak concouis, you'll be scared sh**less, but you wil eventually get over as for the time you serve on there its alright but for about the quarte of the time when your not working you better have something to do cause it might boring, its feels wierd during your first 'Dive, Dive, Dive'
i just got off duty from the USS Kentucky, shes a trident submarine out of Bangor washington.
sub life is really hard, and tedious. Its culture is really really tough. Its where perception is reality, and that knowledge takes the place of trust.
i had worked days at a time, with an hour sleep at a time to get a job done. Cramped spaces, hot, and fatigued,,,
its a place where a marine wouldnt survive from all the hard work.
e mail me if you want the whole story.

Serve in UK Royal Navy subs for 20 years. You can overcome claustrophobia but I would not recommend it to anybody who suffers.
As per the USA guy, this would be spotted during training or during a visit to a sub when the reality sinks in.
Work is hard, can be boring, but if you have a good crew then it can also be rewarding.
