Problem with citroen c3 temperature gauge reading.?

the temp gauge went from normal to max in a few seconds on my citroen c3 1.4i while on a 2hr drive, checked cylinder head, expansion bottle for fluid loss/excessive pressure, and fan, all are fine and the car showed no loss of performance, and should rule out possibility of thermostat failure.
could the fault lie in the temperature sender giving out false readings or would it be best to get a diagnostics check to pick up fault codes to find problem?

Answers:
If you check all of it out then it could be a bad temperature sender.
