Has anyone built up a 2.1 pinto engine from a ford capri, I have a problem with the piston rings, please help!
can anyone tell me if this is normal? as i know its a scraper ring but i dont want it to scrape the bores away! lol
any help would be appreciated

you need to gap your rings. not a big deal but what you need to do is actually file the gap so the ring fits correctly, this is for the scraper rings or compression rings only, the center spacer ring, if its to tight needs to be trimed. i have built many a racing engine and have always custom fitted piston rings to keep tight tolerances to prevent any loss of compression or premature blow-by. also remember to use a good ring compressor and lots and lots of oil, not assembly lube but lots of oil, engine oil.
Hi Jason. From what I know, that particular ring must be squeezed to get it in--the tool is called a ring compressor (no kididng)!. It is normal, but I am not sure how much larger it must be.
If not reasonably tight, it will not push the excess oil out of the cylinder before the engine fires, and will smoke like mad.
You may want to check with a parts shop to find out if that much is actually normal, though my hunchis it is about right.

yes it is normal, but you dont overlap the spring, you but it together and it will compress when the oil rings are clamped in place before fitting, charles is correct though you will need a Ring compressor to keep every thing tight, this will make fitting the pistons easy and not damage the rings, be sure to alternate the gaps on the rings around the piston

yes, there is a ring gap look up engine spects. u will have to cut the ring to size. Find a motor rebuilder and pick his brain. there are also lots of "how to rebuild your --------" books.
