Does anybody know how many clicks my handbrake can come up before it will fail an m.o.t (fiat punto)?
Answers:
five on average
not sure but about 4 clicks
well these days its all done on a rolling road. (two rollers) ideally its no more than 3 clicks. but a new cable will stretch a bit. and the shoes will need to bed in for about 10-20 miles
which means that for a while itll feel like nothing is happening, (so dont over adjust them)
i have a fiat cinq and it passed the MOT when the handbrake used to come nearly all the way up!
as long as it goes on, the best thing to do is when you take it for MOT ask the mechanic to tighten it.. thats what I eventually did when it got too annoying and he did it for free cos it only takes a minute.
if you got it fitted at a garage then just ask them to tighten it.

Its not the actual amount of clicks that matters its the acutal efficiency. as one member mentioned the brakes are tested on a brake tester, and the efficiency is what determies if it passes or not
There is no criteria on how many clicks there should be.
All it needs is to have enough reserve travel to accommodate further wear. For example, if the lever is touching the trim work around it when the handbrake is fully on it will fail as it can't be applied any further.
It must come up to the required efficiency and must have reserve travel left on the ratchet. The number of clicks is irrelevant.Mick
The number of clicks is not important if the handbrake works, then the handbrake works. There is no maximum amount if clicks for the mot test even if the handbrake can be pulled right to the top, as long as it works, it passes the mot. From a service point of view though between 3 and 5 clicks is about right.
A handbrake will fail if it can be pulled almost full travel. five clicks would be about right
