Should Disabled car parking spaces be made narrower?
If the car space was narrower the Porsche driver would be less likely to take the space because the trolley dodger would be more likely to bugger his door up when exiting their car because they would need more space! This would make the Disabled person less prone then to having their spaces taken by ignorant drivers
Does anyone agree?

There are statutory guidlines for widths and lengths, see the link below.
Fortunately I do not have to use a wheelchair, but one day I might. I would like the best facilities available to make life as easy as possible. I don't mind giving up a little bit extra walking now, if later in my life it is made easier when life is harder.
Some disabled people need the space for their wheelchairs!
that would defeat the purpose of a disabled parking bay! Might be better to fine the F.U.C.K.E.R with the 4 x 4!
Wouldn't having a narrow space make it harder to get the disabled person's legs or equipment out of the car? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a reserved space?
I disagree, as there needs to be space down the side of the car for the person to get into their wheelchair.
no, sometimes it is really hard to work with the wheel chair when you get out of the car or you need more room to help the person get out of the spot. I have a disabled sister and less room would make the process harder when we move her around, then we would have to worry about a car parked right next to us
No. The spaces are wider for a reason - to allow doors to be opened fully, and allow space for a wheelchair between cars.
Confiscation of Porsches without disabled badges parked in disabled spaces - to be sold in aid of disabled charities - is the answer.
the disabled parking spaces have to be wider for wheelchair access.
people who are not disabled and yet still park in these spaces really get on my,nerves, like the same in parent and child spaces when mr boy racer parks in one...
Ummm no. I understand the frustration in having dumb people take spots that aren't for them. However, I've driven a handicap van and they take up a TON of room. So when the van opens and the ramp is lowered all the space that is there is needed.
However, I wish there were stiffer fines for the people that take the spots and shouldn't be there.
you are quite right..
I think it's a good idea, but, the Porsche guy can maybe afford to pay for scratches, and if the bay was too narrow the people who should be using the bay might have difficulty opening their doors fully to ease getting in and out, especially if they have a 2 door car, Nice thought though.
NO! They are like that for a reason!
You should have reported this idiot to the police or to the store management. I have reported this same problem to the authorities on numerous occasions and waited until they get towed or ticketed. It's fun to watch and hear their useless explanations.Disabled parking spots are for people with the designated sticker. That person should not be using that spot for any reason. Your idea would not work because some vehicles are modified to handle wheelchairs and the additional space is needed.
you should be standing up for those that can't stand up for themselves after all some of those handicapped people stood up for you in a war zone some people need the room to unload their wheelchair out the side of a van..most police officers will write a ticket, but if you don't complain then they won't waste their time enforcing the laws.
They shouldn't be made narrower. Many disabled people need the extra room in order to exit their cars, especially those that may be wheelchair-accessable cars. The way you avoid non-handicapped people taking handicap spots is to ticket them. A fine of a couple hundred bucks should change his parking habits.
Sounds like a good idea at first. The truth is, many disabled people have to have larger spaces because of wheelchairs. Some, like my parents, have to open their car doors all the way to be able to get out of their car. I think the answer it to increase fines and patrols of parking lots. Here, in Coos Bay, they have civilian volunteers who patrol the cities parking lots, and write citations. Offenses have gone down because of it.
No, they need the space for exiting and getting their equipment out. Most businesses now have security, If these guys would do their job and fine these doofs it would happen less and less. Also most businesses don't put up fine warnings on the handicapped parkings. I've seen it happen only once in an exclusive mall. The guard found the car in the handicapped parking and called the police. They towed away that sucker in less than 10 minutes.
no coz that would defeat the idea of a disabled bay u havnt thought this question through
