Overtaking past junctions in the UK?

I agree this is a dangerous situation. Strictly, the onus is on the vehicle turning out onto the major road to ensure that it is safe to do so, but self-preservation suggests it is a bad idea to overtake when you can see a side-road junction coming up. Would more signs help? I don't think so. I say the answer is better trained drivers, via a much longer, more thorough regime of training, testing, and re-testing. Drivers need to be able to recognise and react to situations on their own, not just to read and obey signs.
This is something a speed camera ccan't catch, so yet another reason we need a better police presence on the roads.
They do eventually learn once they get Side Swiped. They should make motorway driving a full one hour test as part of your licence.
As a driving instructor i agree with you - but the idiots who park near junctions and force you to overtake near them must also accept their share of the blame!
I teach ALL my pupils to look both ways and to park in a safe, legal and convenient location (not within 10m of a junction) - but i have no control over them after they have passed their tests.
Maybe its time to retest people at set intervals.
I agree totally, this goes alongside people who undertake on dual-carriageways and motorways just so that they can save a few seconds (or worse show off their driving skills??) and cyclists in London who don't think that the red light at traffic lights apply to them too!
As a biker in the UK i find that many car drivers dont look right either, many of my friends have been hit that way, just like in the TV add in the UK.
This is so true my friend, one thing i hate is that when im driving and a side street is approaching, i see a car just come towards the junction and the bonnet of his car is already half on the road before he even thinks to look left and right to join traffic. Pretty dangerous, gets me so angry and annoyed.
