What is the new seat belt law for children, is it judged on height or age?
Answers:
My understanding is that children under 12 who are under 4'5" must use a booster seat.
The VOSA website should carry the detailed info you need.

In the U.K It's based on height. It's gonna give short people a new stigma to worry over.
it depends on the state, but it goes by age or height. I have never seen cops give anyone a hard time about it though, so do what you think is safe. I mean of course your baby needs to be in a car seat, but i think it is a little out of control to have it till they are 12 or even 8 like in some states.
think it is if the kid is under the age of 12 and less than 135 cm (thats about 4 and a half foot i believe)
Based on height and age.
height i think
the height that a child must be over to not have a booster/child seat is.. 1.35m
All Children under the age of 12 who are under 135cm have to use a booster seat in cars as from today.
All children who fall in this category and travel in a car, van or other goods vehicle must have the booster seat or face a £30 spot fine, or upto £500 if it's taken to court.
both, unsure of exact height but 12 th birthday / 5feet whichever happens first. before this a booster seat is required
Its a good thing that the government has done, but you cant force a child to sit in a car seat, its like forceing a horse into its box,if it dont want to go in it then dont keep on naging it (pardon the punt).
it's based on height, if a child is under 4ft 5 they need a booster seat.
Both, it is actually quite confusing. Under 12's must have a seat UNLESS they are 4'5" or over. Therefore, if you have an exceptionally tall 9 year old who is 4'7" then they DO NOT need to use a seat. Alternatively, if you have a 12 year old who is short for their age and is only 4'3" they also do not need a seat as they are over 12 years old. Is this making sense yet? Children under 14 must wear a seat belt when on school buses/minibuses if they are provided. First, primary and middle schools must provide seats for the children to sit on in minibuses etc. If you are in a taxi, you must use a seat if provided, but if not provided no worries. If you are making an unanticipated short journey, i.e. in family emergency etc. that is OK to. Hope that is a little clearer for you.
This whole thing is rediculous. The age should be 5.
At 5 years old my kids ride a school bus without booster seats or even seat belts for crying out loud!! This is a state (tax) funded method of transportation, the same people that are telling me I have to buckle, tie, strap, my 11 year old son into a car when he is wearing a seat belt with a shoulder belt.
COME ON PEOPLE!
