Should there be an upper age limit for vehicle drivers?
Answers:
No, but I think there should be stringent physical and mental testing implemented at a particular age. Vision, physical and mental reflexes should have to be tested.
Most definitely
Yes yes yes yes they can (I said can) be much more dangerous than youngsters.
hell yeah
I think persons should have to retake a basic driving test after a certain age, say 70/75
Read the statistics.
It's young drivers that cause all the problems.
Yes. I believe once you become a blue hair, you shouldn't be allowed on the road. That's usually around 70-75. That's also when your vision starts to leave you.
Instead of an age limit there should be yearly testing for everyone over 70 who is driving a car. They should have to take a test for vision, hearing and reflexes each year. Licenses could be renewed each year for the elderly which include the qualification test. That would solve a lot of problems.
where i live in FL they are nuts there was a 78 year old man that hit someone and drove 20 miles with the person threw the window. until he got to a toll booth the worst part was he said he was driving home and he was driving the wrong way. i say that at 65 they should be tested yearly
It depends on the individual they should have health checks and sight tests to make sure they are safe
Not a limit but a test to be taken yearly. Some people are aware and their reflexes good for a long time and others slow up considerably. The yearly test would keep tthe right people on the road and the right people off the road.
No, but after 65 drivers should have to take vision and driving tests on an annual basis.
No, but a Brain test for women drivers
Thats Progress
yes they should be retested at 60 then every 2 years after that
some old peaple think they own the road even if they are doing 25 in a 60
where vision, hearing, and reflexes are diminished--yes
Any thing over 70 should be behind the wheel of a car
No there should not be an upper age limit for senior vehicle drivers BUT there should be an age limit where redoing a drivers test becomes mandatory.
BUT let's not just isolate Seniors for retesting. Redoing a drivers test should also be mandatory for certain traffic violations and repeat driving offenders. Driving has to become a privilege and not a right for all people who choose to drive.
Once you reach 70, compulsary retests should be taken at least every 3 years in my view. And that's not forgetting mediacal/eyesight tests.
Actually, I'd also like to introduce an IQ test to be included in the theory test too. Jeremy Clarkson once brought this up, and I think it'd keep the real danger off the road: stupid people, young and old..
No. The greatest risk is from drivers under 25 who are responsible for the majority of accidents.
Some people stop driving when they no longer feel safe on the road, others continue and drive in a much safer manner than many lunatics on the road. There are more than 20 people in Ireland still driving who've seen their 100th birthday.
I agree with the idea of a retest for certain offences, isn't that already the case for newly qualified drivers, 6 points in the first 2 years and you are banned then have to take retest, same for drunk driving offenders?
Yeah, probably wouldn't hurt.
Yes!
I have watched my Father-in Law, for the past 10 years deteriorate and his driving is now about 50% of what it used to be, his reactions have gone, I refuse to get into the car if he is driving.
he is now 80 years old and to my amazement, no ability test has cut in from DVLA. he is still driving. His friend is 80 years old and he is even worse.
This is wrong.
Court decides on all such matters.
Some 80-year olds are virile and jumping around with joy like 18 y.o. Some 18 y.o. are just the opposite. (My grandpa is a good example - he is still chasing skirts. tch.tch..!!) My son? a 18 y.o couch potato and drags his **** to even get up for a glass of water.
So, who decides? What gives?
Safety is important of course. Personal freedom is important too. This is where police do their job of pulling over drivers who drive erratic. Then the court decides. Makes sense?
I think at like 50 people should have to start taking driving tests again but there are lots of people that are in there 70 or even older that are great drivers and dont need to be tested but if there is a set age it is a good thing because then people are not getting into accidents
No! Over 70's have to declare any medical condition. I do admit that over a certain age responses do get slower so perhaps a driving test would be a sensible thing for over 75's.
There is a limit, it is controlled by your ability to pass the vision, knowledge and driving tests.
lets see what all the people that say yes think when they are that age and suddenly soneone takes away their freedom and tells them to sit at home and wait to die. Age has absolutly NOTHING to do with it. its ABILITY. I think everyone, regardless of age should be tested regularly. There are plenty of people that should be taken off the road, some are old and some are not. Thinking that some magical age suddenly removes your ability to operate a car is just as stupid as thinking that somones religion makes them a terrorist, or their color makes them a criminal and so on. Put yourself in the other persons shoes before you decide what they should and shouldent be allowed to do
Yes, a n elderly lady(80years young) has just been banned from driving for going the wrong way up a motorway!!!!!!the mind just boggles.
yes after seventy
hell yeah old people now a days. driving really slow at like 5mph or walking where ever the hell they want thinking they own the street. younsters maybe a bad thing but old people is a real bad thing. if u honk the horn or something u could scare them to death and then u have a dead person in a car and the car is driving off on to the high way. i think the licnes should stop or be tooken away once u turn 60 years of age thank u.
Yes. That is the simple answer, but what age would it be?
I would say as soon as your too old to drive. For an example, my father had been driving for years, no accidents etc., but when he was 69, I noticed he was getting rather bad at reacting to increased traffic on the roads. When I mentioned this to him, he replied "I've been driving for years, and better than many other driver's" That was basically true, but it always comes down to your ability to drive, and not how good you are.
I think there should be regulations that require any car driver over the age of say, 55, to re-take a driving test, and take a medical.
Then again every 3 years. L.G.V. drivers, who already have more regulations on them with their ability to drive, should also be included if they drive a car as well.
Young drivers who commit a driving offence, should, in my opinion, also be considered to be required to re-take the test.
I like your question, and with careful thought by those who make all the laws and regulations for drivers, the roads would be a much safer place for all of us.
Yes when you see old people driving around with their mouths open. It's time to take their keys away.
