Could someone please explain the difference between a life jacket and a buoyancy aid?

Answers:
A life jacket can be of two types, already inflated (foam) or self inflating, either way it will fully support your weight and will turn you the right way up (onto your back, face up), even if you get knocked unconscious as you fall into the water.

A buoyancy aid is only going to assist you in keeping afloat by adding some flotation, but if you are unconscious it will not flip you the right way up., nor usually will it support an unconscious person.

By the way, the life jacket will only work if you are wearing it correctly and it is the correct size, I see many people, especially kids, wearing jackets that are way too large for them, if they fell in they would most likely fall out of the jacket and its usefulness would be limited.

The ready inflated ones tend to be cumbersome and awkward to wear, I suggest you go for the type that uses a CO2 bottle to automatically inflate the jacket when you fall in the water, the system uses a salt tablet which dissolves and lets off the gas. Also get one with a strap that runs from the back of the neck to the waist strap, and if possible get one that has a crotch strap too.
is there one?
A life jacket is a buoyancy aid, but a buoyancy does not have to be a lifejacket. Like airplane seats. Or lifesaver rings.
You wear a life jacket, hence the name. The rest are things that you attach to yourself or cling on to /cos they float.
I would think a life jacket is something you wear, whilst a buoyancy aid is anything that keeps you afloat, such as a rubber ring, floating log, or one of those floats you hold on to.!!!
A life jacket is there to keep you upright, head above water and stop you from sucking up the ocean (which is bad for the fish).

A buoyancy aid is anything that floats and can help you stay afloat: wood, a plastic bag filled with air, etc.
Bouyancy aid is another name for life jacket. Life jacket has the bouyancy to will help u float. Remember not to inflate your life jacket inside the airplane incase of a water crash landing. Inflate it when u are already out of the airplane and in the water or else u will be trapped inside the plane. the bouyancy of the inflated life jacket will push u to the roof of the plane and it will drown u. Just for ur info.
a life jacket is a type of buoyancy aid, anything that can be use to help keep U afloat, or aid in Ur buoyancy is a buoyancy aid.

even a condom filled with air can be classed as a buoyancy aid
Bouyancy aid will help you keep afloat but you need to be conscious, a Life jacket is designed to keep you afloat even if you are unconsious that it why the bouyancy thing around your neck. it ensures that you float face upwards.
life jacket is made to a standard and has a date and gets inspected by the law,the aid you are speaking of could be a throw ring,or the cushion you see on a lot of boats or even an ice chest if the boat has sunk
A life jacket is designed so that when you're in the water, and if unconscious, it hold your head upright and out of the water. A buoyancy aid is only to help you stay afloat, without regard to body position.
life jacket is strapped to you and a buoyancy aid is can be anything certified by uscg. meaning the toss cushion or a throw ring. something that can be thrown to a person in the water to aid their ability to stay buoyant.
