Maintenance on a wooden boat?
I understand that varnish and paint technology have come along way recently but reallistically how often am I going to have to repaint / revarnish the boat. How often will it need taking back to the wood and how often can I get away with just a couple of coats.

Folkboats look great and they sail so sweetly! Yes, there is a lot of maintenance, and it sounds like some answers coming your way are good ones. On the bright work, I like using Epiphanes Varnish because it performs well and is durable. You want to start with at least 4-6 coats from bare wood and then a little steel wool and 1 coat per year is all she needs, easy enough. There are plenty of great epoxy paints out there that will last plenty of seasons.
Owning a timber framed/lapped boat is a labour of love from day one. Freshwater is not so harsh on paint and varnish as salt water is and there are plenty of products on the market now that will last alot longer than previous materials IE Yacht Matt Yacht varnish etc etc.
At the end of every season you should rub the ol girl down and paint her or if she isn't that bad every 2 seasons will do. Don't be mistaken though boats of any description are expensive to keep up but it is pleasurable
Wooden boats are a joy. With that said they are also a heartbreak. So much more work.
But if you do it right from the start and keep up then you will be able to keep to that schedule you have. Yes, about every two years..with light upkeep.
Good Luck I wish you well. Enjoy
Way too much if you want to be out on the water.
