My car wont start HELP!?
Answers:
Just clicking sounds like a flat battery. Been there .
There is no easy way to test the battery itself, and you need to take voltage readings across the battery terminals with the engine running to check the output from the alternator (approx. 14v running, 12v not shows the alternator is OK, 12v running shows that the battery is on its own.
Without jump leads, you are just going to have to beg a jump start from someone who does have them, or call out your breakdown organisation, if you have one.
FYI, the correct procedure for jump starting is .
Connect one red croc' clip to the positive terminal of the flat battery. This way, you aren't waving a live positive jump lead around!
Connect the other end to the positive terminal of the good battery.
Connect one black croc'clip to the negative terminal of the GOOD battery.
Connect the other end to a earth point on the engine of the car with the flat battery - DON'T use the negative battery terminal.
You've worked around in a circle, and the mnemonic I use to remember this is Bad, Good, Live, Earth or "BuGLE" - you remember it your way, I'll remember it mine .
Turn on the headlights and rear screen heater on the donor car - this prevents its alternator's electronic control circuit from getting a nasty surprise when it finds a second, flat battery connected to it.
Start the donor car. After a few minutes, try to start the "flat" one. If it doesn't go, wait and try again.
When it does start, you can disconnect the jump leads - use the reverse of the connection order above. (Some schools of thought say that you should switch off BOTH cars before disconnecting the leads.)
dood that sucks same with me
i dunno, ring the AA or RAC or summat
BRUM
you just have to jump start it from a battery and if you don't have one then use some one elses
Well it sounds like your starter could be jammed - if its just clicking and not even turning over.
Get someone to turn the ignition while you bang the starter with a hammer, or you can try putting the car into 2nd gear and then pushing it backwards - that should turn the starter and may un-jam it.
Or get some people to push you and try jump starting it (get it rolling, put it in 2nd, slowly bring clutch up).
Good luck!
make it go brum
put a second hand starter in that should get you started
yes it sounds like it might well be the starter motor you can try one or two ways to get it going by giving it a few taps on the end of the starter motor in a few places with a hammer(it might take a few attempts)or by putting it in gear and going to the back of your motor and rocking it back and forth whilst it is in gear.b****y cars
First check the battery cables and make sure they are clean. If they are and the brushes in the starter are worn, you can tap the starter with a hammer, while someone holds the key in the start position. Most of the time the starter will engage.
Hope this helps
Master tech 40 yrs,
Yeah i thinks its the starter mortor.Get someone to give u a push and just jump start it.I wouldnt damage the starter motor anymore ,it could just be that its jammed as the other poster said
it could be the battery. get a garage to check it out. most garages do call outs when the car wont start.
Banging the starter may help, but it sounds like a dead battery or solenoid.
It is a bad battery put some jumper cables on it and jump it off. Then you can take it to the auto part place and they will test it for free. At that point they can also see it the alternator is working write. Auto Zone will check it free if you have one. If not you can use a volt meter you can get one for about twelve dollars. put it on the battery and see if you have a twelve volt reading. Then hold them on the battery and have someone turn the key on and try and start it if meter drops down a lot and comes back up it would be the starter but if it goes below twelve volts and stays down it would be the battery. On the starter you can sometimes tap it with a hammer then try it. Also check the battery terminals to be sure they are clean if they have corrosion on them it will not start. The auto parts can also check the starter and tell you if it is bad. I still think it has something to do with the battery though. Good luck!
If it is a repetitive click your battery is dead. Check the water level in your battery if it the kind that needs water. Look at the battery terminals, are they covered with corrosion, clean them off, scrape them clean, put some kind of vaseline or grease on them after they are cleaned to prevent future build up. If the problem is your starter, it would sound more like a whine than a click. If it is a single click you probably have electronic ignition (little white part attached to the frame of your car under hood close to wiper area.) If this needs repair, there is no warning, your car will not start until you replace that part.
check the battery and connections, if thats good check fuses, if thats good, check the clutch safty switch(if std.) try and start it in N if auto, if that doesn work check starter, if that doesnt work bring to garage
Either no power is making it to the starting motor or its given up the ghost. If you can see it, you will see 2 solonoids on the front of it. Using something with a think plastic handle like a screwdriver, cross-connect these 2 solonoids with the screwdriver, this should start the car unless the starter is no longer fit. If it des you have an ignition or immobiliser problem, if not you need a new starting motor. If you are parked on a hill try bump-starting it. This should work, remember you do this by putting it into second gear (or reverse if going backwards) and letting it build up speed, then once you have enough speed (with the ignition on) release the clutch. Its amazing how many people try it by turning the key!!
Oh and to answer your first question, yes you may get the starting motor to work by hitting it, but only if its just jammed. I'd still get a new one though ASAP.
It could be starter, but I think that an equally likely possibility that the terminals to the battery need to be cleaned--use a little wire brush or scratch pad, to both terminals and the posts, or the battery has gone flat because it is old.
In any case, you may need a jump start or recharge if it is the battery. It you have a parts shop nearby, most will check the battery and or charge it for you, at next to no, or a little cost.
If not the battery, terminals, or wires, then, yes, it is probably the starter.
