If it is like the K&N filter, you can use soap and water to clean it. But, as you clean it, run the water in a backwash method so as to push any grit/dirt out and away from the filter. Let the filter air dry for a couple of hours, then spray a lite coating of filter oil on the outside of the filter. Don't use compressed air to blow the dirt out because this caused damage to the filter eliment. We use similar filters in our SCCA T1 Dodge Viper race car and this is how we clean the filters after every weekend of racing, and have never had a problem in 2 years of use.
Alcohol works great.
Its 21 years or so since I had a Austin Mini and a VW Beetle with one on, but I used to use normal washing up liquid if it was just dirt or Petrol and then Washing up liquid if it was oily. Don't forget to re oil the sponge afterwards with WD40 or light machine oil to keep it working just fine.
the filter should come off or how are you sopposed to clean it
ether a clamp holds it or it just pushes on!
as above soapy water and let it dry for an hour or so.
