I think it's one that carries containers that require power e.g. containers that carry frozen food.
A reefer is a ship made to refrigerate (cool or freeze) it's cargo. They usually carry fruit, potatoes or fish. They have cargo holds that can be completely cooled or frozen and kept in a very narrow temperature range. The also have very sophisticated ventilation systems to prevent the cargo from riping or rotting due to gasses that the fruit produce. Nowadays most cargo's are transported in containers, so many times the modern reefer also have a lot of (reefer) containers on board. But because of the expanding container trade, these cargo's are transported by normal container ships also, though because of their size they can't reach the smaller places. Reefer ships are mostly painted white to prevent "cold-leakage". They can sail very high speeds, sometimes up to 30 knots.
