1998 Mondeo Heater Problem?
Even with aircon off, the temp stays hot all the time, ?
Answers:
The cable linking the control to the heater has bent - they do this over time.
I've just fixed mine - it is not as difficult as some DIY car jobs but is fiddly and time consuming - allow half a day, preferably a morning!
The part itself is only available from Ford, and IIRC mine cost me just under £7 including VAT.
First, remove the radio. This is the only bit that requires "specialist" tools - a pair of those wire radio removal handles. Put the gear knob in 2nd or 4th gear and put something over the gear knob - there are sharp edges under the radio. It is best to remove the radio but, if you don't have the security code, you will just have to work around it.
Undo the two screws at the side of the radio opening. Pull the top of the panel forward - it won't come out far, but it is just enough to work with.
You will probably have to cut the inner wire of the cable. I removed the outer sleeve fixing by getting a small screwdriver under the locating "wings" and breaking them off - there isn't room to get a pair of pliers in to squeeze them shut.
Fix the inner wire to the control but don't fix the outer sleeve yet - you might want to remove the cable temporarily!
Now remove the panel to the left of the drivers footwell. The heater end of the cable is just visible up behind the remaining panel. Unplug the inner and outer sleeves.
Use the old cable to route the new one. It needs to go over the corrugated air hose by the side of the heater. Don't plug it in yet - you still need the slack up the top.
Return to the top and snap the outer sleeve into place. Now you can replace the heater control panel (and the radio, if you wish).
Back down to the footwell and plug in the lower ends of the cables. Replace the footwell panel.
Have a stiff drink (you will need it, I promise!) and congratulate yourself on saving LOADS of money!

Is there any gas in the air con system, if there is not it might mess you about, by the way if there is no gas it is expensive to replace.
