Air filter?
Answers:
You could replace the original ford filter with an aftermarket one by K&N or Greencotton, they would fit into the original black 'air box' where your old filter was. You could also remove this air box and fit an induction kit, thats the cone shaped air filter you see in racing cars and boy racers (who think they have racing cars!) cars. It makes the engine sound better and have more power at low end. It does exactly the same job as the filter you have now, except its shape allows better and cooler air flow, hence increasing power in your engine. It wont turn a nova into a ferrari, but you will notice the difference. Bear in mind tho, it will use more petrol!
No You can get a filter to go in the original housing just tell the shop what type of carburator you have and they will do the rest, but you can get an aftermarket filter that will do away with the housing also and just bolt on to the carb
you will need to change the housing too.
I always tell my students that in order to increase their horse power you need to make it easier for the engine to breath in and out. The easier the air is going in and the exhaust going out means more hp. Now with that said I have watched as many students have dressed up their vehicles in an effort to get more power, and run faster. Truth is most of it is a waste of time effort and money. No one change is going to give you the increase you are looking for. The air filter is there to provide the engine with clean air and that's it. The manufactor designed the air induction system the way it is for many reasons. Peak performance and vehicle reliability. It would have been cheaper for them to install the chrome round tube with the cone shaped filter on the end of it but the reality is it would have not made a noticeable difference in how the car runs or drives or increased the reliability of the vehicle. Watch out when changing filter types because your goal is first to provide the engine with clean air. I have seen at least a half a dozen vehicles that had the K&N filters end up with dirty worn out engines because the filters allowed dirt particles into the induction system. There are amny products out on the market and people purchase them and it has become a big business, lots of dollars are spent but the results dont often support their claim. Not wanting to rain on your prade, If you really want performance develop a plan and put enough equipment on that can show you a diffrence. Good luck.
Dont bother, leave it as standard.
no you could put a k and n filter in its place
