Should older people have to take a competency test in order to keep driving?

As people age their reflexes, eyesight, coordination, etc deteriorate. This can affect their ability to control a motor vehicle. However, in the UK there is no gauge for a persons ability to drive a motor vehicle once they have passed their test.

Should older people have to take a competency test (not a full UK license test, just 10 minutes with an instructor to prove that they are capable of handling a motor vehicle) once they reach a certain age? And what should that age be?

FYI I am currently 31 years old.

Answers:
YES I think everybody should at least every 4 or 5 years. They don't make "older" people do it because the AARP says it's age discrimination. I have seen people in the 30's and 40's that need to justify why they still have there licenses as much as someone in there 70's
yes they should, once they get to 60
if you don't like my driving, stay off the damn sidewalk!!!
EVERYBODY should have to prove their ability to drive, not just the elderly. It is a zoo out there.
Perhaps, though i would say that at 32 i have forgotton alot of the highway code, though have more exerience and confidence. Yes i think they should, though i also think that if you are looking at driving those that kill by dangerouse driving should get much harsher sentences
When you reach 40 ask again
When you are 50 ask again
When you arfe 60 ask again
When you are 70, do you really want someone to tell you you are not allowed to drive.
You will of course have a bus pass and possibly a zimmer frame or wheelchair
a lot of younger people need a tougher test every year to be able to drive as they are too bloody dangerous
Yes, and so should the younger drivers!!
Yes definately,
eyes and hearing!!
might seem young but maybe from 50 years old i think
Definitely. Bluehairs are causing unnecessary accidents and quickly becoming one of the most dangerous things on the road.
YES, they should definitely be given a competency test!

at the age of about 70-75.they should be given another exam
Yes, including hearing, vision and reflex tests. Maybe starting as low as 30
OMG yes.. and we need it in the US also.. I think after any major illness and after the age of 60.. And if you need a wheelchair or a walker.. keep off the road! Call your grandkids to drive you.. I also don't like teenagers driving.. but michigan is making so you have to drive without your friends under 18 i think..
YES definately!!
i think so..some time they can be reckless drivers.driving too slow..not being able to check their blind spot
oh yes eye sight hearing and most of all reactions should be tested every 2 years for people over 55 the roads are bad enough for people in there prime
Yes as most of them learnt 2 drive in the army
yes this should be considered but i think you should have to do it once every ten years or so after passing your test in the first place!
I think everyone should have a retest every 5-10 years, people easily get into bad habits, i bet i wouldn't pass again. Oh hold on i don't drive.soz
I think older people should starting at 75 years of age. I work for an large auto insurance company and I get a lot of claims where older people accidentally, push the accelarator instead of the brake pedals.
yes they should.my granma totaled 3 cars in a parking lot. i think every so many years everybody should have to update their license, especially old people.
yes - i also believe that every other time ppl get there liscence renewed u should have to do a re-examination
I think everyone should, but yes, especially elderly. Maybe some type of virtual exam at the DMV where cars come out of nowhere, to see how one would react.
I'm not from the UK but I think they should when they reach a certain age. My mom was 80 and thank goodness she quit driving on her own. She still had a couple more years before she had to renew it but she had a problem with her eyes and was slowly losing her sight so she quit. There are alot of people that won't though. I think they should have them checked atleat once a year after a certain age.
I agree with this totally.. I think when people turn 65 they should have to re-take the driving test. I almost failed my driving test when I 16 because the instructor thought I was driving too slow. fact of the matter was that I didn't know the speed limit where I was so I was going 25 until I found the speed limit sign. Old people drive too slow anywhere.. freeway, surface streets, resdiential neighborhoods. they don't know how to get where they're going, they don't know how to obey most traffic rules.. and heaven forbid they're trying to find a location that they don't know where it is.. they'll drive 15 mph in the right hand lane with their blinker on as soon as they're in the vicinity at all until they find it. Ridiculous.

I agree with you older people should have to re-take a driver's test.. or at least some sort of course to see if they're a threat to other people on the road!
oh my god yes, had a old man pull out on me at a roundabout the other day, missed him by inches, also was going to work one day got stuck behind a old man who was doing 10 miles an hour down a 40, very dangerous, they should be made to r-take a test. but it is not only old people it is youngster's as well, they need to keep off your bleadey **** when you have kids in the car, they are not impressing anyone!
Definately!!Some of them shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets never mind drive!!
I believe that all people should have to prove that they still have the ability to operate a motor vehicle everytime that they renew their drivers license.

Either a full blown road test, or a simple motor skills test. But, everyone should present themselves to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and submit to some new protocol.

I have seen that there are many factors that can inhibit a person's ability to drive - neurological, alcohol or drug abuse, or otherwise.

Unfortunately, for many of these people - they are the last ones to recognize when it is unsafe to operate a motor vehicle. These people cause accidents which hurt or even kill other people.

A uniform protocol would also ensure that we are not discriminating against our older drivers.
Absolutely, at 60 and every 5 years after that. Nothing fancy, just to prove they are still capable.

Old persons generally try to limit their driving to daylight, quiet roads, quiet times etc. though. They do try, and sometimes to give up the car is a big issue for them. It's like admitting the end is in sight. We do need to make allowances!!
A "Driving Check Up" would be a good idea at around the 70 yrs mark. But I would also recommend a re-test for the under 25's, after 1 year. Seeing the level of the average "Boy Racer" driving around now a days I would think that the insurance company's would demand it!
Yes!! But I also know a lot of younger people who need this, too!
