chevy smallblock 350
You opened up a can of worms with this one. hahaha Depends on what you mean by "best". Most successful is probably the Chevy small block as most made and used and parts are cheaper and more readily available. Small block Ford is reputed to be more tuneable, though the Chevy folks argue that point. Chrysler has the Hemi's and such, but none of that compares to the lifespan and success of the Chevy small block. Flathead Ford was the king from the early 30's to 54 or so so fits in there too. I doubt that it can close the gap on the Chevy though in sales, etc. Just my opinion of course. I am sure you will get a ton more on this one.
this is a tough question, it really just depends on what your looking for. My personal opinion would be the general motors 350, plenty of hp and torque for day to day operations, but you sacrifice a little on fuel economy, and emissions.
Chev 350, and its 6 cylinder version the 262/4.3 liter. Parts are relatively inexpensive, and common. Its certainly the most "flexable" of most engines as far as options for carburation or FI, or even run off 4,6 or all 8 cylinders (Such as Caddies had for a few years)

Ford developed the V8, but they were never happy with just the one design and they kept tweeking it- the 350 Winsor, the 350 Cleveland, the 350Modified (Which took the best or worst of both engines and made one engine)

Dodge's 318 could be argued as being one of the best V8's ever made. Reliable, strong,,,,but never really popular for street racing,,,,and was reliable and strong for trucks, and cars.

*Shrugs* Guess the quesiton is- what is the engine going to be used for?
I would have to say the 350 C.I.D from chevrolet. built from 1967 till 2002.the small-block’s displacement to be increased from 327 to 350. This is accomplished by retaining the 4.00-inch bore but increasing the stroke from 3.25 inches to 3.48 inches. To add strength, main-journal diameters are increased to 2.45 inches and rod journals to 2.10 inches and added webbing and thicker bulkhead sections are cast into the crankcase. The upsized small-block is available exclusively in Camaro SS350 models for ’67.
Easiest Yahoo Question ever, the small block GM, 265, 283, 327, 350 and probably some other displacement numbers I don't even know about.
Most fun - 426 Hem
Most popular - small block Chevy - 262, 283,302, 305,327,368,400 cid - all versions of the same design with wide variances of horsepower, toque and performance. Very versatile app.
I'm going to say the Chevy SB since other GM models were different. Same CID but different engines. Some parts were interchangeable but not all. Take the Pontiac and the Chevy 350 CID engine for example. You could swap carbs, heads, alternators/generators, exhaust components and intake manifolds but nothing else. You can't even swap starters since the housings are opposite each other. Chevy on left, Pontiac on the right as you're facing the engine.
Certainly one of the most commonly used V8s in the UK was the 3.5 litre Buick.

This first found its way into Rover P5B and P6B, and latterly into Range Rover, Land Rover, MGB V8, Triumph TR7 V8, and into numerous kit cars and a multitude of conversions owing to its lightness, short length, and relatively acute angle between the Vees.

During that time its capacity has varied between 3.5 litres to over 5 litres.
Fiat/Ferarri 2.2 from Dino.

Straight 6s are better BMW etc but why not fit a Rover V8.
most people would say the rover as it was amircan in the first plase
electron670 hit the nail on the head.
Most popular 283-327-350 Chevy.
But by far the best (quality wise) was the Chrysler 318.and the 360.
No comparison as far as durability.
always liked the g.m. v8 fitted to the rover v8 cars.
the rover 3500. what the police used in the 80,s.
For longevity and toughness, the Chrysler 318. For ease of repair and easy to find cheap parts, the Chevy small block. For the best out of the box performance, the 440 six pack.
