What type of wood is best for building a simple boat? (Which floats best?)?

Answers:
+ If Simple is your Key word? Make a pine frame and screw Marine plywood to it. Cross brace as required to make it strong enough (a good excuse to put in a couple of seats across). Then caulk with waterproof caulking (silicone) between all joints then paint both sides for a good seal. If your boat is going to be 8 to 10 feet 2x3" and 2x2" will probably work. If it is your first try you better go with a rectangle shaped boat. 24" high sides minimum.
Should hold two people and a cooler.
Don't forget paddles and life jackets.

Good Luck

Chipboard, cheap and cheerful..
cork
Balsa or chipboard with some waterproofing (obviously)
Boats don't float because of the kind of wood, it makes no difference, they float because they displace a volume of water that weighs more than the boat and cargo does. You can make a boat out of concrete if you want!

So the answer to your question is that the best wood is the one you are able to work best in.
use marine ply it takes a shape easily cuts easily and best quality is guaranteed for 30yrs
dont use chip board it soaks up water and falls apart
I would prefer oak wood. But the best wood is timber wood.
Use marine plywood - it's stable and long-lasting.

Flotation is related to the weight of the volume of water displaced, compared with the weight of the boat and its passengers. A greater concern should be the water-tightness of the wood, so you should use a good marine varnish (yacht varnish or yacht paint) to seal the surface and also plenty of silicone sealant.

Go and have a look at some self-built proects in real life.

Have fun and do things safely and properly!
Are you talking model boat or one for you to sit in.

If model - balsa works well. Needs to be sealed well as it is very porous.

If real boat - anything works. Just use whatever you have lots of locally and is cheap. If you want one that lasts a long time, that is a different matter and will depend on how you want to use it. Also, is it salt water or fresh water? You need to use the correct wood and correct finish for the type of water.

If you recall the old Chris Craft boats, they were built out of mahogany. They are still around from the fifties they do require care for the wood as far as the finish.. But the mahogany boats are the nicest in my opinion
Displacement is the truth here. And there are boats that are made of cement. http://www.ferroboats.com/ Jim
Marine grade plywood. Seal with West Epoxy.
Well, I'd have to say oak, but like the one fellow said, plywood'll work too (it is best to use regular lumber then waterproof it yourself. It's cheaper that way) Maybe mahogany.
P.S. There's a grand website that has free blueprints for building a simple boat. Mother Earth News
plywood
Teak is the best wood type you can get to make a wooden boat. the strongest also for water. or dry pine wood, make sure whatever you use, it needs to be dry.
ordinary ply is much cheaper than marine ply. I would use this unless you are planning to take the boat to sea. Marine ply is x rayed for voids which can occur in normal ply. However unless you are going into rough stuff it shouldn't make any difference.
A small boat..marine ply
marine plywood and epoxy resin. plywood is easy for the beginner to work with. the epoxy resin seals the wood against moisture, strengthens it, and seals small gaps in seams. best to use two layers. just go to amazon and look for books on boat construction. then go to your local library and see what they have. stay away from labstrake construction for your fist time.
bolsa wood then paint it with tar and the it floats really well and its water tight i no cos i made a boat out of bolsa and its great
Your expression "which floats best?" refering to wood used in boat building has not the slightest effect on the ability of a boat to float, it is like saying which type of steel floats best.

What are you really asking?
Marine ply
