I don't think it has anything to do with the car being over ten years old,my mondeo is eleven years old and the airbag light doesn't stay on,sometimes it doesn't even come on when the ignition is turned on! Probably a dodgy connection somewhere. PS. How old is your mondeo?
There is a connector that hangs around near the underside of the front seats that is something to do with the seat belt pre-tensioners. That has become corroded, and needs to be cleaned and remade. That should solve the problem.

if its older mondeo the number of times the light flashes tells you the problem. count the flashes and visit the above site
Most likely its the sensor under the dash , not a job for an amateur, messing about with air bag instrumentation can sometimes set it off (very expensive)
