Hey hey i managed to put petrol in ,y car i went to garage and bought a new can with funnel?

Poured it in and tried the ignition again..i have lights and every thing else is working but it's just not catching on..do i need to leave the petrol in over night so it can syphon through??

Answers:
definetly not, the petrol is pumped to the carburrettor or injection system & cannot syphon through as the fuel tank is lower than the fuel system located in your engine bay, if your car is later than 1992 ("K" reg) it will most likely be fuel injection. On most fuel injected cars you can hear the fuel pump run for 5 seconds when the ignition is turned on. It would be of great benefit if you could state the make, model & year of your vehicle. Hope this helps
Petrol should make the car start. Must be some other fault.
its not a diesel is it?
try again is battery the flat bump it in ! petrol pump u don't need to leave overnight! hope this helps !!
Did you put the petrol in the right hole?
How many liters did you put in? You should at least put in 8 liters or so. then assuming you have a newer car with an electric fuel pump in the tank. turn the key on and wait 30-60 seconds for the full pressure to build prior to starting.
Try pumping gas pedal twice to prime it.
You ran out right. The pump will need to pick up the fuel and push it to the carburettor or injection, how you achieve this depends on the type of fuel system. You said Petrol, so I will forget Diesels. 1st (unless you know where the fuel pickup is within the fuel tank,) make sure the car is level. front to rear and side to side, If you can put three or four gallons in, especially if you cannot get it level. next work out whether the car has an engine driven or electric fuel pump.
If it has an electric fuel pump, which you will hear whining for maybe 10 seconds after turning on, before it times out, i.e. most injection engines, keep turning on until the red lights etc come up, dont crank or try to start the engine, wait till the whining stops, and turn off waiting a few seconds, the time out relay will click, and then back on until the whining stops very quickly after you turn on, this means you have fuel pressure so start cranking the engine.
Classics with clicking fuel pumps, turn on and wait till the clicking slows which means you have fuel pressure and start cranking,
Mechanical pumps need the engine cranked to pump fuel, this is a job for a mechanic or DIY man, take the fuel pipe off the Carburettor, stick a pipe over or down it and suck on it, old bike pump with leather seal reversed or Mk 1 human mouth equally effective, when you have petrol sucked this far refit the pipe and start cranking the engine, You could crank until fuel came through but the battery would probably probably be flat long before this happened, if the starter motor survived that is,
starter motors should not be cranked for more than about 15 seconds, continuously, I have done a minute but the leads were melting and you could have fried an egg on the starter.

Tow starting is fine with a mechanical pump, keep the choke in, but injection engines need a very long rope if you are not to hit the tow car when it starts, kills the cat as well, and if you have not run out of fuel after all could fill the cat with fuel and blow the car up when it does start.
you need to put more fuel in 5ltrs not enough
