But for sheer 'nuts 'n' bolts ability without any frills - LANDROVER Defender - proper gear levers - no fancy gadgets!

depends on what you're gonna use it for. ALL new 4x4's are junk. regardless of who makes it. The Independent front suspension is a joke and WILL break if taken off road. The jeep Rubicon is the only one that I havent seen break consistently. I build offroad vehicles for a living. If you want something tough in a relatively stock configuration, go with an old school Chevy Blazer (full size with solid axles) or a 70's Toyota Land Cruiser. I got one of each and they are lots of fun offroad. I'm also ASE Master certified.

At the Top end of the market I'd go for Land Rover or Volvo XC90 - the new Discovery big, Defender smaller -or- for something more compact wait for the new Freelander.
Hyundai Kia or Ssangyong - You Get Value for Money - Comfort, Reliability, Well Equipped, Lower Maintenence Costs, and Good Fuel Economy. You also get Brilliant Off Road ability.
There's the Galloper, Tucson, Santa Fe, Terracan, Sportage, Sorento, Korando, Musso and Rexton.
BMW X5 is NOT a real 4x4 and is a Soft Roader. It has NO Off Road ability. A Land Rover, Hyundai, Kia or Ssangyong would CRUSH an X5 on an Off-Road Assault course.
For a Real Rugged "Go Any Where" Off-Roader try the Defender, Galloper, old Sportage or Korando / Musso.

The Hummer (H1) will go anywhere. Rather pricey, but worth it.
The JEEP will go anywhere. Tons and tons of upgrades. or
The Toyota small pick-ups. Their very very light and flexible as well as there was a lot of thought that went into their design, before 2000 and Toyota came out with their mid and full size pick-ups.(not-impressed).
Lastly the Land Rover either the 88 (2dr) or the 105 (4dr). All aluminum body and frame, along with a well thought out drive train. Although not very easy to come by.
The HUMMER the JEEP and the Land Rover are well proven. Over 50+ years in use tried and trued in every terrain possible.
I doubt this was a question about lumber.
There is only one answer to that question - the land rover defender!!!!

Jeep, been doing it longer than anyone else. Built better and goes better than any Solihull s hitheap. In the 60's Land rover had pretty much a 100% hold on the Aussie outback. They need reliability out there. Then the Japs came along with the Shogun.literally overnight the landie became extinct as the Shogun started every time, ran without trouble and didn't fall apart. Land rover always have been over rated and under funded and their quality and reliability have suffered because of it. My old N reg jeep Cherokee 2.5TD was faster than a land rover then and it still is now! plus its never broken down and it goes off road (pulling range rovers out the s hit!) every weekend!
