Sometimes they are called idiot lights. If it comes and goes my mechanic says there's nothing he could do. The car doesn't show the symptoms when the doctor is in. He says if it stays on, bring it in and he can do a computer check. It device reads all the puter problems that need fixing.
When you had it checked, DId he tell you which code caused the light to come on? Very odd he says nothing to worry about. I'd go someplace else to get another opinion. Good luck.
warning lights are there for a reason. try a different mechanic.
Did he check that the thermometer is working correctly (it could be damaged) or that coolant is flowing around the engine block as it should (there could be a block & that could cause the engine to run too hot) ? Link these together & your engine will be producing mixed readings to the control chip. that's if you have a control chip - how old's the car?

If it does have a control chip, then the mechanic should have an error message that links to a particular problem. It might be best in this instance to take the car to a manufacturer garage - ie. take a Ford Focus to a Ford Garage with allt he correct kit.
take the bulb out
Is it the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon?
If Check Engine Light, go to a dealer or Auto Zone and have it scanned. There is a reason it's coming on. First, make sure your gas cap is clean and on tight( until it clicks)
If it's the Service Engine Soon ( as on GM ) it means the computer senses it's time to change oil. Many people gets these 2 mixed up.
Auto zone will do a free analysis. Just go there when the light is on, they'll put the analyzer on it, tell you the codes, and give you some ideas of repairs and cost.
If it is the alternator light it means that your battery isn't charging. If it is the oil pressure light it means that your oil level is low, check it. If the oil is OK and the light still stays on it could be a lack of pressure. This is more serious. Whatever it is get it checked and if the garage says don't worry about then take it to another garage.
some times your gas cap might not be on tight it happen to me i have a 99 Pontiac Bonneville
i have the same prob! got a second hand ford focus 03, been in the garage 5TIMES!! the light keeps coming on, got the.. cat converter changed it came on again 4 days later got the o2 sensor cleaned then had to go back 4 days later and got it changed and driving home from sunderland today 6 days later and it came on AGAIN! so back in the garage again tomorrow think they sick of me, but all i want is a car without the engine light on
on newer cars even filling the gas tank with the engine running will turn the check engine light on even though nothing is really wrong, however your mechanic should have told you what the code is so you can decide for yourself.take to a parts house that pulls codes for free and get the code written down so you can share it with us and find out for sure.
Why ask a mechanic and then ignore his advice.
Which light is it anyway.
There are many lights and there are people like me who can design circuits to replicate the behaviour of these lights so that a faulty ABS for instance can be disguised at MOT time for £50 instead of a new ABS module at £250.
If it is the oil light worry although mine comes on on wet days because the wire rubs the driveshaft..
All of the warning light run on sensors in whichever part off the engine. Often the systems they're monitoring are fine, but a faulty sensor displays a problem.
For example, a light coming on th say the engine is too hot could be a faulty thermostat. The mechanic may have tested it himself and seen that the engine isn't too hot but the sensor is broken.
The danger is that you won't be warned properly if something does go really wrong.
If its the engine management light (yellow ) it is more than likely warning of a sensor faulty , as you have said if its on it should be fixed a computer check at your local garage will tell you exactly whats wrong
