Rover 214 Head gasket Gone?

As you can tell by the title I have a Rover 214.
Im a new driver, the car is a M reg in good condition. I bough the car in Jan 06 but passed my test in Oct 06. I have been driving it in the meanwhile. Today whilst driving my g\f home the temp gauge kept alternating between medium temp and high.
At the lights when I was stationary the temp went up into the red.
As soon as I passed the lights I pulled up.
There was nothing at all in the coolant (first time I have ever topped it up), the temp cauge went down to 3 quarters hot.
I then filled it up properly at home to the max level, where 3 parts water 1 part antifreeze.

The cooland is leaking thru the rubber pipe which ill resolve at the end of the month and the engine oil is low (also will top up at the end of the month, sooner if possible - low cash flow at the moment)

Is there a chance I brew the head gasket?
There is no white smoke coming out the exhaust, not checked the engine oil cap for throth yet

You need to replace the hose and top up the oil urgently, waiting till the end of the month will turn your engine to scrap. Engine oil will cost you less than £5 and a second hand hose from a breakers will only cost you a couple of pounds. Make sure that you put antifreeze in with the water when you top up the cooling system as if you don't the engine could crack and cause damage beyond repair. From what you have described your engine should be ok this time but you will only know for sure once you have replaced the hose and topped up the coolant. Good luck.
these are prone for head gaskets to go i buy and sell cars and have had quite few of these go get the pipe fixed top up the oil and see how you go check oil filler cap and dip stick for signs of a white milky colour if you have this chances are head gasket has gone if not could just be leaking out of pipe
hi, the rover k seiries engine has an alloy head and a metal head gaskit which when overheated can cause the head gaskit to blow. my advice would be to rectify the water leak at the rubber hose, top up the oil and also top up with anti-freeze. run the car until the cooling fan comes on and ensure that the car doesnt overheat. be sure to bleed the water system by opening the bleed screw on the pipe from the thermostat just under the distributor. some other checks you can do is to check that oil has not entered the water or vice versa. good luck
Hey, hows about the water pump? They usually go before the head gasket and produce an intermittent kind of heating before the heads finally pop. Also if your head gasket is gone you are likely to see steam or oil dripping out at where it joins the main block. It is usually pretty easy to see if an engine is leaking stuff, so have a good look!

With car prices as they are, if you can't resolve this cheaply then consider another car. I am guilty of spending money on old cars when there are newer ones out there for what I just spent.

And if you can, keep the revs down, below 2,500!
you mite be lucky and it may only be a loose hose but it could be your headgasket then again depending on how hot it got the head might be warped but if not leaking from block and head then your are lucky i warped my 414 head and it easy done
That rubber pipe won't cost more than a couple of quid at a breakers yard, they'll probably be embarrased to ask for money for it. Sounds like you were lucky this time, but Rovers have weak top ends so I would get this done immediately or not use the car til you have.
