What is rogue waves?

Answers:
Theyre a natural phenomenon, it's where a strong current runs counter to the main direction of travel of the waves. Theyre also called monster or freak waves and apparently not that uncommon although rarely encountered.
hope that helps
There are pretty much three types of waves.
1. Swells 2. Wind Chop 3. Rogue.

Rogue waves are waves that come out of nowhere. They are
out of sync with the swells so you really notice them when they hit the boat.
a roug wave is a huge have its so big its like maybe 50 or more feet high and so wide it can flip a cruiz ship yeah its big
A rogue wave is a wave which has been created after two or more waves have merged with each other. Their total energy and mass is increased according to the size of the separate waves' energy and mass. Rogues often reach huge heights of over 60 feet and are responsible for many deaths in the North Sea and the North Atlantic fishing grounds.
they are nasty, good explanations about how they are caused above so i will not add more, I have come across them in Atlantic and the east coast of Africa
What are Rogue Waves? Deadly!
Go to the library and take out the BOOK "The Pefect Storm" and you'll get the best description of these phenomena.

It seems like there are more and more stories of vessels experiencing rogue waves over the past few years.
a rogue wave is out of sync with the other waves and is usually much, much larger. You can read all about them in The Perfect Storm, by Sebastian Junger.
Your previous answers are right, Rogue waves are the big unexpected, not following the usual rhythm wave, you might have seen that recently on the deadliest catch series on discovery, about the crab fishermen of Alaska. I've known them as a "Clump" wave as well, same thing of course, if they hit amidships it can roll a ship right over, phenomenal power. You might have realised that the waves are irregular anyway, usually it's the seventh wave that differs by rolling in bigger, although a much smaller scale, you'll have seen out takes on TV where people get caught out by these on beaches when paddling along happily in the surf, or on a harbour wall in a storm grinning at the camera, (it'll be those people on yahoo answers who contribute smart *** or offensive answers, i hope lol)
it all looks fine until that seventh wave comes along and "Glug" they disappear for a moment, or are suddenly up to their knees in water on a beach, with an expression of disappointment and surprise, it is entertaining though lol
You already have some great answers but let me add this, in my brief experiance it wasn't so much the height of the wave as the depth of the "hole" that proceeded it. Feels like the boat rolls on its quarter toward the approaching wave as the bottom drops out and then "BAMM!" and it's over and your thinking 'WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT?" while extracting yourself from underneath the radar stand.
