I am trying to fit an SU fuel pump but cannot get it to start? does it have to be primed before use?
Answers:
If it is not ticking at all, take the black cover of and clean the points. you will find a bit of a tap on the body will sometimes kick a SU pump back into life after it's been standing.
One of mine had been standing for 11 years and i ended up having to seperate the top off the pump before it kicked in.
see if the fuel reservoir hose is connected and has fuel.
if ti is an electric pump it will start pumping when turnd on. If ti doesnt try checking the power supply(relay). You shold have one 12v. on the relay with the key off,and another with the key on ,2 12 volt supply. one goes to the pump and the other goes to the ignition. Also as dumb as it may sound, check to make sure it is installed in the right direction, as if is not frustration can cause really simple problems to esclate
should have a good earth connection to the vehicle body ,do this by fitting a wire lead to the pump ,then screw the lead to a clean metal panel,
There are two basic types of SU pumps. One type, for installation on or very near the fuel tank has a weak suction and high output pressure. The other, for installation near the carb has a powerful suction and relatively low pressure output.
You must use the correct unit depending upon where it is to be positioned or it will not work.
