Anyone out there interested in Barges?
Answers:
Do you mean narrow boats, or wide beams ? I don't think you mean barges.
You'll need to think about insurance, maintenance, mooring fees, logistics ( parking, postal etc ).
There are lots of narrowboat brokers, just buy a copy of Canalboat, British Waterways probably have a leaflet on live-aboards - they are based in Watford, or try waterscape.com
don't assume you can live on a narrowboat anywhere, there are lots of ( tightening ) rules to live-aboards.
never thought about it before, but thinking about it now - i dont think it's odd - could be a pretty cool way of life. Not so sure in winter though - but in summer, warm nights, sailing to the pub by the river, hitching up and having a drink - sounds pretty idyllic to me!
Cant help you though - sorry!
There's a new magazine out called the barge keeper. Just the thing for the enthusiast. I Would love to live on a narrow boat and the interior of some have to be seen to be believed.
Sorry gave you a bum steer pardon the pun. The magazine is called 'Waterways World' and is priced at £3.25 and can bought at any good bookstore but you may have to order it.
It has all the information you need about hiring and buying narrows or otherwise but canal boats. Some of them seemingly are suitable to be taken out to sea and sailed across the oceans wide. Good luck in your quest.
I am interested in them when I am sailing on a river or canal where they need to pass. I have seen 12 being pushed at the same time by a tug. They create a giant wake. You need to be aware of barge traffic in shipping lanes.
COOL GO FOR IT DUDE
NO NOT REALLY
