get some octone boost and put that in your tank.

drop a 383 stroker in it with 4.11 gears naw j/k swap engines and turbo it if u have the money
you could go ahead and dump thousands into that car and the results will be approaching noticable. start with a car with more potential if you can. too hard to extract any usable power from 1.6 liters. if you do stick with it, get the engine to breath better. an engine is a bi fancy air pump. get the ait in and out as quickly as possible. that will yeild some decent relative gains on any engine.
You don't in it's original state, the ford 1.6 standard carb engine cannot be modified with chips and stuff, if it's fuel injected you may be able to overide the standard ecu settings to provide a little extra bhp with new filters and ecu mapping
I suggest dropping in a Briggs & Stratton taken from a lawn mower at you local Wal-Mart, it will make as much or more power.

Hi, there are a few ways in which you can get the extra push from ur engine, without changing it.
1. Lighten ur flywheel. This will give you quite significant acceleration, but you'll tend to lose out a little on ur top end. It'll also make climbing hills a lil difficult. Just a lil, and it's still tolerable.
2. Custom 4-2-1 extractors. They can improve acceleration by providing good low-mid torque and can even reduce ur fuel consumption.
3. Custom high torque camshaft. This'll put a slight dent in ur wallet, but cams give the most noticable power gains. A 268 deg cam will be just nice.
4. Help the engine breathe easier. Get a less restrictive air filter (I prefer HKS and K&N), and a slightly larger diameter exhaust pipe. For a 1.6, try going for a 1.8" ~ 2" pipe. Also do a port & polish on the cylinder head if possible. Happy modding!

Nitrous Kit, you might also consider what you will do when you have accelerated, a Cosworth aint just a different engine you know.

That ought to give up to a 20% boost in horsepower for about £100-200. Oh yes, there may be turbos, but they tend to wear engines out and cost much more money than the "hot chip."
There are specialist tuners who will take of your cylinder head enlarge the inlet ports and polish the ports which will give it quite a kick . they are not cheap other than that all the petrol boosters that they sell are pretentious crap, and do not work
