How many people step out onto the road without looking, and why?

I am a bus driver and see several people a day do this causing me to brake. How can people lose their sense of self preservation?

Answers:
because they think nothing will ever happen to them
They're infulenced by The Beatles "Abbey Road" album.
I do because I have an unconscious deep seated desire to be splatted across the highway.
because if you hit them they get $$$

sad but true
Because they know that when you hit them they can sue. It's a get rich quick scheme.
people don't care if they die because the world is a craphole.
Too many. People are stupid.
Well I sometimes do. And I do it becasue I am in a hurry or know that a car will not come by
My family always spots people like this i guess they just have a large amount of confidence and dont think they can get hurt u have to watch the street with eagle eyes thats what my dad says, people just dont know the trouble and i hope they always get pointed out too, watch out. Dont stress they will understand one day, and there are many people in the world like that. You have to ignore it cuz they will never learn. Have fun and dont stress. :)
just as our fingers are different, people are different, you can't tell what is on thier mind or what in the matter with them, or what they are going through, i have being driving for 7 years and I know this, you should be extra carefull, the road is for all users
Makes a change its normally you bus drivers causing the fellow motorists to slam their brakes on
People from the U.S. get killed every year in the U.K. because they look left not right first. Could it be the same here? Are there too many Brits that look right not left first?
Me, I'm guilty sometimes you just get lost in thought as you are walking along you don't really think about where you are and it is quiet easy to forget that you are walking out on to a road, I have had to be pulled back by friends so many times because i have just walked right out in front of cars..
I saw four people do that just the other day! I guess they figure that walking was invented before driving so they as pedestrians have the right of way over vehicles. Which of course, THEY DO ! People, including me, sometimes go into their own little world. I sometimes forget that crossing the street means being courteous to other people and vehicles in the street. I have got to be honest, I do not recall how many times I stepped out there and someone had to brake for me. I am pretty sure it is less than 6 times in the last 20 years, but then again, isn't once too many. You make a great point. I for one will be more careful.
I don't do it, but my dog does that stupid thing.
Why?
I don't know why he do it, I have to ask him, Oh, wait first I have to teach him to speak.
i look many times because i know how people drive and when i was a kid a gear i knew was killed when she ran out from between some parked cars, in a cross walk and was hit by a car only doing 25 but still killed her
