Is it safe to use vegetable or similar as a safe alternative car fuel?

Answers:
Veggie oil can only be used in Diesel engines.

Most engines can work on a mix of diesel and veggie oil, but to run 100% veggie oil, you may need to have an in-line fuel heater to reduce the viscosity.

which has chapter and verse on the in-and-outs of alternative fuels
Yes but you need a mix of both. Will need to change fuel filters often.
yes but you have to get car converted to run on it I do know people that have done it. Also you need a car that can be converted good luck more of us should be doing it.
If you have an old diesel vehicle,it`ll run on straight filtered chip fat.You have to start it on normal diesel(red will do)Its illeagle in the uk though.
Modern engines are a little more choosy in their fuel
You have to know what you're doing, but bio diesel is legal; its just you have to pay the same tax on it whether its used chip fat from the chippy or canola oil. Ridiculous.
The Center for Alternative Technology (link below) are good at this kind of thing.
NO. Vegge oil and the diesel version Bio diesel are not good for fuel systems and filters. Since they are a bio product, they can and will absorb water and become acidic.Which is very bad for fuel systems. Also they do not have the viscosity, or lubricity to handle cold weather. Translation, it turns to molasses in cold weather making starting the engine impossible.
Only if the car is diesel and then you have to watch what you are doing.

Basically these alternative fuels are "bio-diesels", made from used oils, chip shop oil and the likes, filtered and mixed with other ingredients.

A diesel will run off used vegetable oil but will need to be filtered down enough and will need to be mixed with other stuff to prevent it from damaging your engine.

Do your homework before you end up damaging your engine or its external components. I have heard of people running their motors on parafin and 2 stroke oil, they work great for a while and then things start to break like fuel pumps and injectors. This is because the fuels they are burning are degrading the internal components of their engine, seals ec.

ALSO, you still have to pay DUTY on bio-diesel and other fuels. If you make your own alternative fuels you still should be paying the tax on them.
