Should motorcycles above 150cc be banned from UK roads ?

Answers:
This question is so stupid I assume it's been asked only to provoke. On what planet would it make any sense to ban a 150cc+ motorcycle.

It's not the size of the motorcycle that poses any problem, usually once you're matured away from the younger hot head type most motorcyclists are responsible.

I've been around motorcycles for over 30yrs now, I also drive a car and have in the past a driven a multitude of vehicles in most of the European countries, believe me when it comes to dangers on the road 150cc+ motorcycles are the least of our problems.

It's a sad fact that most motorcycle related accidents in the UK at least, invovle other vehicles, predominantly cars! The insurance, police etc even a have an acronym for it "SMIDSMY" for the car driver says "Sorry Mate I Didn't See You".

Rather than banning any particular type or size of vehicle we need better training and education for road users.

Why is it that at 17 you can pass your motorcycle test and be restricted to 33BHP for 2 years no matter how much money you have. Yet at 17 pass your car test and you can go out and buy a Maclaren F1 (If dady is rich enough to insure it).

If this a safety orientated question then surely this should be addressed. There are far too many cases of young first time car drivers, who have filled their car with all their mates/ girlfriends and then either killed them all or someone else as well.

So, answer is NO it's a stupid question!
No.
It is not big bikes are the problem, it is the people driving them.
No. Really - Has it come to this in the land of Nortons and BSAs and Triumphs and Royal Enfields? sniff.

Why not tighten up licencing laws, start stricter enforcement, require better safety gear, etc? Lots of small bikes are dangerous in the hands of the wrong person, and lots of big bikes are quite safe.
OK, I'm not from the UK, but I don't see the logic. That would be like banning people with shoes larger than size 9 from the sidewalks. If they were going to try that, they would need to also ban cars over 1200cc from the road to protect the cyclists, and then trucks of any worthwhile size, to protect the folks in autos. I suppose really large loads could then be legally delivered using large, horse drawn carts. When France perforce invades, the military could require blue paint as official uniforms.
no on way never if car drivers could learn to open there eyes then my life would be sweet hit twice and still alive thanks to leathers and helmet no thanks to people swerving in to and sideswiping me all car drivers should be made to spend 12 months on there bike just to see how inconsiderate they are
why stop at motorcycles. i cannot understand why if the max speed limit in a country is say 120kph or 75mph dealers in motorcycles and cars are allowed to sell vehicles that allows people to break the national speed limit. Wonder how many lives could be saved on the roads if the governments halted this .
no

it's not the bike thats the problem it's the Moron riding it once they get their licence they can ride anything

licences should be limited to size of bike
one day you can only use a 125 with a top speed of 100mph and slow power up to that speed
next you can ride a 1200cc machine that does 200mph and reach 100 in seconds does that sound safe to you
No.. ban the prats on 125cc mopeds that ride like they own the road.
No, ban cars instead. Or buses.
While you're at it, how about castration for cyclists that don't stop at pedestrian crossings. Yesterday I was about to step into the road as the green man suggested I could and this moron nearly took me out.

If all white vans were painted pink would white van man syndrome disappear?
yes

lots of people have died because of them!
I agree with the majority of the answers, it's not the speed at which the bike can travel which is the problem but the people who don't know how to drive them at the right speed for the road and conditions.
generally motorcyclists damage themselves and not others.
Absolutely not - what should be banned are the fools who think they are indestructible and ride them very badly or dangerously. The majority of bike riders value their lives but a hand full - the ones we notice - do not. In my experience, a correctly taught motorcycle rider makes the best and safest car driver.
ban 4x4,s they ban bikes from green lanes but it,s bloody great big 4x4s chewing up everything, that does all the damage and then blame bikers,
NO b ut before anyone can drive any kind of car, they should be forced to ride a bike for 2 years and pass a test. That might teach the blind bastards what bikers are up against every time they go out on the roads. and would stop 50% of the casualties "Sorry mate I didnt notice you" just doesnt cut it any more.Accidents are 90% caused by other drivers; bikers have to be good to survive, so why should we be penalised for the selfish ignorance and stupidity of others?
Come on you can't be serious. Lets just ban all vehicles! Start walking!
why you will have motorcyclists wearing seat belts next oh my god
no mate its not the bikers thats the problem its the other road users that dont see them i nearly lost me leg so i know what am talking about 6 weeks in hospital 12 months off work all s because a driver didnt see me now i drive a car i always look twice for motor cyclists
Absolutely not. Ban all cars over 1 litre? Somehow I don't think that would go down so well.

Motorbikes don't kill people - idiots do.

I have several bikes, and ride an old 1986 Yamaha YB100 to work each day. I don't need anything bigger simply because I couldn't go over 40mph whatever I was riding or driving, and a tank of fuel lasts me weeks. However, if I was riding further or had to go faster, I would need the flexibility of a faster bike. Unless you want to be stuck behind me going up hills!

Just ban or heavily fine the idiots - why would you like bigger bikes banned, may I ask?
