Best first car?
I have £4000 to spend.
I know nothing about cars but I do love beetles :-)

I you would say that the best car as a first car would have to be a Vaxhall Corsa. They are brilliant to drive, Fun, reliable, cheap on insurance(depends what size engine), if you crash the parts are cheaper than most cars because it's a uk car (depends if you live in the uk, if not just get a car that is well known to be reliable) and it doesn't matter what age it is you can still make it look good (you know.. give it a kick a**s grill, spoiler and stuff) and they are easy to drive (some cars like the Masaratzi are hard work not worth looking at). The prices can range from £600.00 to £25,000.00
If you still don't like corsa get a british brand car! cheaper on parts so if you have your first bump it wont cost you the world.
STAY AWAY FROM FIAT,BMW,MAZDA,SUBARU,SKODA ANYTHING NOT ORIGANALY MADE IN THE COUNTRY YOU ARE IN(at least untill you have a bit more experiance or if you have the money) Remember!! It's not worth getting a flash first car(example Ferrarie, Porsha) as you will have a few mistakes, bumps and scratchs.

Vauxhall Corsa
I have a fiat seicento sx, little engine and cute. looks a bit like a postman pat van but in a cute way lol! very cheap insurance, cheap to run, cheap tax. Its a lovely car. I wouldn't spend £4000 on the car, that could get car and years worth of insurance. good luck :-)
depending on your age, I had a reualt Clio and it was good to run, cheap insurance and really reliable. And now i have a mini cooper S which is Great!!
buy a skoda fabia 1.2 only group 1 insurance and its owned by volkswagon group.itll never go wrong.EVER!!
buy a Mazda or a Honda .should get it in your price and insurance is low on both makes.
If it's your first car, I would assume you are young and in that case, insurance is going to be a big issue. Phone round and see what is cheap to insure before you buy. Something like a Fiesta or Corsa shouldn't be too bad.
There were a lot of cars I would of loved for a first car but the insurance companies said no! I found out that I could insure an Escort for pennies, so went looking for one. After three weeks of attendance at my local auctions I finally found a gem. So if you know somebody who has even the slightest clue about cars, get down to the auctions, bargains galore and great buzz to boot.

I push Toyotas because mine have been great as far as dependable, low cost (seldom needing repairs, ect). I bought my '93 new, it has needed only a starter in all these years. Regular garage service of course.
In addition, they do withstand crashes better than some, though hopefully that will never happen to you.
