What's the best car to buy for under £1500 and why?

Answers:
Depends what you want to do with it.

Rover prices are on their backside at the minute, so if you're not too bothered about image they're a cracking buy. Ignore the concerns about head gasket problems. At this price, it will have already happened to a previous owner, and it's very very rare for a K-series engine to suffer more than one failure once it's been correctly fixed with a the better land rover designed gasket.

The bubble shaped 200/25 is a very competent car, moreso than it's bigger brother, the Honda based 400/45. Steer clear of the 600 unless it's a diesel. You'll pick up a nice 1998 R plate model for £1500.

Failing that, the Fiat Bravo also suffers crushing depreciation, so a 1998 1.8 HLX is fully loaded with all the electrics you could ever need, a gorgeous interior, and suprisingly reliable 16 valve engine is in your price bracket. Steer clear of the thirsty 1.4's, ironically the 1.6 and 1.8 engines are much more economical.
VW Passat or golf
very reliable
Ford-escort/fiesta. These are great first time buys. I'm usually just a vauxhall girl, but the older models are less reliable.
any vw. steer clear of modified items.
One with 12 months mot and tax are best.
I agree with the first answer. A Mark II golf, fab car.
cheap reliable little cars with 12 months tax and MOT can fall into this catagory.
ie, FIAT's, CITROENS, RENAULTS and PERGEUOT's.
i suggest a:
Fiat Uno or Cinquitichenco (ok i spelt that wrongly!)
Renault Clio
Pergeuot 205, 306 or 206
Citroen Saxo
VW, and Ford's of an age that make this price range tend to fall apart within a year!!
you can have my rover!
i would suggest a vauxhall vectra because parts are cheap and they are going really cheap, theres two round near me for sale for under£800!
used nissan micra with atleast 6months tax and mot.

it is very easy to manage,
parts are cheap and easily found
it has a 1 point engine size, which mean you won't spend much on fuel
Go for a VW, they have a corosion warranty of 11 years. Also the parts are easy to get hold of and you can get non VW parts which are made from the same moulds, which are way cheap, plus there are many independent garages that have VW trained mechanics. I bought a Golf for £1600 and I've had no problems with it in 18 months. Plus they drive really well, are comfy and if you play your cards right some even have AC at that price. Good Look with whatever you buy.. (have you tried a car auction?)
Anything with a FSH and 12 months mot. The biggest problem with buying any car in this price brakcet is condition. So rather than searching out a specific model it is much better to look for any car that suits your need that has evidence of servicing, not too many owners and a full MOT.
mini good build fast we car old stile of course
my mark 2 golf and have 700 left in your pocket
Lexus Soarer 2.5 Twin turbo. May be an old one but it's very comfortable, makes a great sound (engine is silent inside you just hear the Turbos whining which is great), is well equipped, reliable and is faster at the top end than any BMW Mercedes or Jaguar and just about any Lotus. May not fare well on things like fuel consumption or boot space but, well if you want a practical vehicle, get a van, for a drivers machine at a bargain price, you can't do better.
