Can scanner radios really go upto 50 to 80 miles?
i bought a UBC 72-XLT VHF/UHF SCANNER WITH FREQUENCY COUNTER from ebay and i have been told it can recieve signals for 50 to 80 miles just wondering is this true
Answers:
A scanner (or any receiver for that matter) will receive any signal that is strong enough to open the squelch on the receiver. It doesn't matter how far away the transmitter is as long as the signal is strong enough at your receiver. This generally means that the farther away the transmitter is, the stronger it's transmitted signal has to be before you can hear it. You won't receive a signal directly from a hand-held radio at 50 to 80 miles. You migh hear a mobile radio if you are on a hill top and have a large base style of antenna. Possibly with a pre-amp as well.
its true but it depends on the antenna. Also bad weather can increase that range. or have the reverse affect depending on the settings.
yes
If you get yourself a good, tall antenna, yes, you can get at least out to 80 miles, sometimes farther.. weather and atmospheric conditions will affect what type of reception you get.
By the way, if you go down to Radio Shack, they have books that will show you the frequencies for your local area..
Enjoy your scanner, I do mine..
