When I go to ext 1 video or ext 2 dvd player on my TV I get 2 thick black lines each side of picture. Help?

Its an incorrect setup.

Do you have the TV model?

There should be something like Picture format and change it to 16:9 should do the job. Each TV is differnt so I would say check the manual on how to change the picture format.
Make sure your VCR is not in the set-up mode. This gives a signal as you describe to set the channel on your TV. Possibly same applies to DVD player/recorder?
