I think the iPod earphone sounds crap.
I have a Sony EX71 earphones with my iPod,
and it sounds much better and crisp.
It's about $25 from amazon.
It's definitely worth it!
Th concept is now very dated especially as mobile phones come with mp3 players now you dont want to get over burdened with all your gadgets, Plus they are anti competition.

Ipods are crap in general.
Well, if you think iPod is crap, name an MP3 player with superior sound quality and then we shall see if that has crappy sound too.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. There is nothing wrong with the iPod. It is fine.
The whole point of bringing out a new piece of technology is to squash all the other small insignificant companies who are all trying to keep up with Apple's superior technology. Apple is in it to make money. That is the point of a business is it not? You get what you pay for. Apple products (not just iPods) are expensive because they are the best. I don't see why everyone buys an iPod and then looks for the first reason to disparage Apple or the iPod?
Bottom line, if you don't like the iPod, don't get one.
good headphones, good equalizer, and good bitrate can fix that easily
The audio quality of an IPOD is without a doubt excellent, but if you put poor quality recording in you will get poor quality playback. i love my 60Gb Video Ipod I do use a pair of Phillips wrap over the ear headphones so that-they don't fall off whilst I am on my bike.
